Ser Borys Baratheon was a knight from House Baratheon during the reigns of kings Aegon I, Aenys I, Maegor I and Jaehaerys I Targaryen. He was the eldest of Lord Rogar Baratheon's four younger brothers.[2]

Character

Borys was often considered to be the most volatile and belligerent of the five Baratheon brothers.[3]

History

Early reign of Jaehaerys I

In the older, shorter versions of the book A Caution for Young Girls, entitled Sins of the Flesh and The High and the Low, in 50 AC Borys met Lady Coryanne Wylde in the inn on the south bank of the Blackwater Rush, beside the ferry landing, as she was traveling to King's Landing to begin serving Queen Alysanne Targaryen on Dragonstone.[N 2] There, he supposedly gave her, on behalf of his older brother, Lord Rogar, the order to seduce King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and so ruin his marriage to Queen Alysanne.[4] According to Archmaester Crey, the meeting at the inn never happened, and the story had been an attempt to blacken Lord Rogar's name, attributing the origins of the lie to Borys. And according to Maester Ryben, the story was nothing more than a bawdy tale amongst the smallfolk.[4]

After Rogar had attempted and failed twice to set King Jaehaerys aside and crown another in his place, Borys was named as heir to Storm's End by Rogar, who had no children himself.[4] After Jaehaerys had reached the age of majority and taken the rule into his own hands, he summoned Rogar to King's Landing. Borys counseled his brother to go to the Wall to join the Night's Watch, as he was convinced that Jaehaerys would have Rogar beheaded otherwise.[3]

In 55 AC, during the tourney held at King's Landing to celebrate the completion of the Dragonpit, Borys participated in the melee.[5]

Exile and Third Dornish War

In 52 AC, Borys lost his status as heir to Storm's End when his older brother, Lord Rogar finally became a father following the birth of his son, Boremund. Borys became sour and angry,[2] quarreling bitterly with Rogar.[4] Borys eventually left the stormlands and went to Myr and next to Volantis. He eventually returned to the Seven Kingdoms, where he joined the Vulture King in the Red Mountains of Dorne. There, Borys assisted the rebel in the raiding and pillaging of his former homeland.[2]

In 61 AC, during the Third Dornish War, Lord Rogar and King Jaehaerys I Targaryen went to war against Borys and the Vulture King. Borys was the first to be cornered in the Red Mountains after his men had been defeated by the men of his older brother. Although Rogar had intended to face Borys himself, Jaehaerys did not want to let Rogar be labeled a kinslayer, and personally challenged Borys to single combat. Borys accepted and charged at Jaehaerys while shouting a taunt. He was cut down by King Jaehaerys with the Valyrian steel sword Blackfyre.[2]

Quotes by Borys

Rather name me a kingslayer than him a kinslayer![2]

—Borys, just before charging against Jaehaerys I Targaryen

Family

Borys was a grandson of Lord Orys Baratheon and Lady Argella Durrandon, and had four brothers: Lord Rogar, Ser Garon, Ser Ronnal, and Ser Orryn Baratheon. Borys had issue.[N 1]

Notes:
  1. Parentage unproven, but widely accepted as fact by some maesters, as well as members of House Targaryen and House Baratheon itself.
  2. Uncertain, may be Davos Baratheon.
  3. The canon status of the character is unclear. See: Westeros.org: Family trees and successions – Comment by Ran (December 20, 2018).

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 Archmaester Gyldayn wrote "Three of his [Rogar] brothers had young children who could be sent to court, he pointed out." (Fire & Blood, The Year of the Three Brides - 49 AC) and "As it happened, the youngest of Lord Rogar’s brothers remained unwed as of 49 AC, and his lordship had two nephews by another brother who were also of a suitable age and lineage to be considered potential mates for a Targaryen widow, [...]." (Fire & Blood, A Time of Testing - The Realm Remade). Therefore, Borys , Garon, and Ronnal all had issue.
  2. In the versions of the book entitled A Wanton's Tale and The Wickedness of Men, it is not Ser Borys who awaited Lady Coryanne at the inn, but his older brother Lord Rogar Baratheon.
