A Game of Thrones
Due to his Lannister blood, Cleos fights for the Lannisters and is captured along with Jaime Lannister at the Battle of the Whispering Wood.[4]
A Clash of Kings
King Robb Stark sends Cleos to King's Landing with his peace offer.[4] Despite carrying a peace banner, his party is attacked twice by broken men, suffering three dead and six wounded.[5] He returns to Robb with a counter-offer by Tyrion Lannister. Because some of his party attempt to free Jaime Lannister despite arriving under the peace banner, Cleos is imprisoned again.[6]
A Storm of Swords
Catelyn Stark releases Cleos to accompany Jaime Lannister, together with Brienne of Tarth.[3]
Cleos is present for the river chase by Ser Robin Ryger, and complains when Brienne insists they cannot stop at the Inn of the Kneeling Man. On the road between Maidenpool and Duskendale,[7] the trio is ambushed by outlaw archers. Cleos is hit by arrows, and his horse spooks and drags him across the ground, killing him. He is not particularly mourned, neither by Ser Jaime[8] nor his parents. Jaime uses Cleos's sword to fight Brienne before the two are captured by the Brave Companions.
Quotes about Ser Cleos
He is not a bold man, this one.[4]
– Catelyn Tully's thoughts
Your grandfather Lord Walder pledged me his support and that of House Frey. Many of your cousins and uncles rode with us in the Whispering Wood, but you chose to fight beneath the lion banner. That makes you a Lannister, not a Frey.[4]
