Daven Lannister is a member of the large Lannister family. He is the son of Ser Stafford Lannister, a cousin and brother-in-law of Lord Tywin Lannister.

In the books

Daven's father was killed in the Battle of Oxcross by Lord Rickard Karstark. Ser Jaime Lannister and Ser Brynden Tully did not think much of Stafford's capacities but held Daven in higher esteem.[1] After the Stark army returned to the Riverlands, Daven gathered the remaining soldiers of his father's army and made preparations to invade the Riverlands again.[2]

At the Red Wedding the Northmen and their Riverland allies were decimated by the Freys and Boltons, who betrayed them. To the remaining lords the Lannisters offered generous terms to stop the fight. Most nobles surrendered with the notable exception of Brynden Tully who still held Riverrun with a sizeable garrison. After Kevan Lannister's refusal to serve as Hand of the King Queen Cersei named Daven Warden of the West and commanded him to lay siege to Riverrun.[3] The siege did not go easy. Brynden Tully had taken all the food he could find to Riverrun so the Lannister army could not live off the land. Further more there were quarrels among the besiegers. Daven complained that the Freys were not helping their allies and only gathered food for themselves. A part of the army was formed of Riverland nobles who had surrendered. Although taken back in the King's peace they were still less then enthusiastic about fighting their former allies. Daven had wanted to storm the castle but was not able to persuade the other commanders.[4]

When Jaime arrived to take over the command Daven was pleased to be relieved of this task and happily informed Jaime of the troubles.

Appearence and personality

Daven has brown eyes. After his father was killed by Rickard Karstark he vowed to let his hair grow until he had avenged him. Although his father's killer was executed by Robb Stark for treason he apparently has not yet cut his hear. At the time of the Siege of Riverrun Daven has long yellow hair, a thick moustache and beard. He looks like a lion.[5]

Daven is blunt and outspoken. He talks with Jaime about the true loyalty of the Riverland nobles in front of some Riverland pages. During the war council he openly says that Ryman Frey is drunk instead of sick.[6] He also makes a jovial impression, joking with Jaime about the loss of his hand and the drunk abuse of Ryman Frey.[7]

Family

Before he was killed, Stafford was negotiating to betroth his son to Desmera Redwyne. An agreement had not been reached but the matter was dropped because Tywin arranged a Frey wife for Daven. The purpose of this marriage was to consolidate the Lannister - Frey alliance. Daven has no love for the Freys but says that he will "wed and bed his stoat."[8]
