Ser Davos Seaworth, called "the Onion Knight", was once a smuggler, but became a landed knight and Stannis Baratheon's most honest and loyal supporter. He pilots Black Betha, his old smuggling ship. He has several sons who serve as pilots or as officers on his own ship. His wife tends his lands on the Cape of Wrath. The sigil of his house is a black ship with an onion on the sails upon a grey field.

Appearance

Davos is a slight man with an ordinary face. He has brown hair and eyes, and a beard peppered with gray. The first joints of the fingers of his left hand are missing. He wore the bones in a pouch around his neck until he lost them.

History

Davos was originally an infamous smuggler who piloted his black-sailed ship into harbors in the dead of night. During the Siege of Storm's End, while Mace Tyrell sat outside Storm's End, starving out Stannis's forces, Davos piloted a small boat filled with onions and other food into the castle and saved it. Stannis decreed that if he would receive lands and a knighthood for his heroism, he must also pay for his past crimes by losing the first joint from each finger of his left hand. Davos found the ruling just, and agreed to the terms if Stannis would swing the blade himself. He kept the bones of his joints in a pouch around his neck because he believed they were lucky, having bought him a future for his family. After the end of Robert's Rebellion, and Davos's lands fell under Renly's rule, Davos continued his service to Stannis.

When Stannis declared himself king of the Seven Kingdoms at the beginning of the War of the Five Kings, Davos supported Stannis's claim, though he was strong in the Faith of the Seven and disliked Stannis's conversion to R'hllor under the guidance of Melisandre. Davos fought in Stannis's navy at the Battle of the Blackwater, where four of his sons were killed. Davos himself spent several days marooned on the spears of the merlin king, barren spires in Blackwater Bay, where he hallucinated that the Seven were talking to him. After his rescue, he planned to kill Melisandre for leading Stannis astray, but she foresaw the attempt and had him jailed. Stannis forgave Davos and made him his Hand.

Davos again fought Melisandre's influence over Stannis by smuggling Robert Baratheon's bastard, Edric Storm, out of Dragonstone to spare him from being sacrificed by Melisandre. As an alternative to Melisandre's magic, he suggested that Stannis come to the aid of the Night's Watch to gain popular support for his reign. Davos then went to White Harbor to negotiate with the Manderlys. Cersei Lannister demanded that Lord Manderly execute Davos in exchange for the ransom of his heir. It was reported that Davos's head and hands graced the walls of White Harbor, but his fate is unconfirmed.
