Donnel Hill, known as Sweet Donnel, is a steward of the Night's Watch and is the squire of Ser Mallador Locke. He claims to be a bastard of the Lannisters.[1]

Appearance and Character

Donnel has white teeth, fat red lips and yellow hair worn in a tumble down to his shoulders.[1] He is slender[3] and makes easy japes.[1] He is a skilled archer.[2]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Donnel is part of the great ranging, the force that leaves Castle Black in search of the wildlings. He is one of the conspirators who intend to kill Lord Commander Jeor Mormont and several other brothers, and is tasked with cutting the horse tethers with Clubfoot Karl.[1] The fight at the Fist disrupts their plan, however.[4]

Donnel is among the men who make it back to Craster's Keep. He knocks one of Craster's wives to the floor when she attacks him during a mutiny.[3] However, Donnel does not join the betrayers and instead is one of the few survivors of the ranging to make it back to Castle Black.[5]

A Dance with Dragons

When Melisandre is burning "Mance Rayder" at Castle Black, Lord Commander Jon Snow has Donnel, Ulmer, Garth Greyfeather, and Bearded Ben shoot arrows at the burning man to end his suffering.[6]

Quotes

This King-beyond-the-Wall will never look for us so far north. And this great host of his is a shambling horde, full of useless mouths who won't know what end of a sword to hold. One blow will take all the fight out of them and send them howling back to their hovels for another fifty years.[1]
