The Dreadfort is a fortress, the seat of House Bolton. It is located on the banks of the Weeping Water, in the eastern half of the continent.[1]

The Dreadfort is a strong fortress, with high walls and triangular merlons that look like sharp stone teeth. It's located next to a volcanic vent, which heats the castle in a similar manner to the hot springs under Winterfell.

History

The Dreadfort is ill-omened, for it is said that the Boltons still keep torture chambers and a special room where they hang the flayed skins of their enemies, including several lords of House Stark before they were defeated by them and became their vassals.[2] During the Boltons' rebellion against the Starks, the Dreadfort held for four years under siege before the Boltons surrendered.

During the War of the Five Kings the Boltons turned on their Stark allies and aided the Freys in slaughtering them at the Red Wedding. The Boltons were then named Warden of The North by Tywin Lannister. With the bulk of the Bolton host trapped south of Moat Cailin, the Dreadfort is currently under the rule of Ramsay Bolton, the recently legitimized bastard son of Lord Roose Bolton. Theon Greyjoy was being held in a dungeon below the castle where he was subjected to Ramsay's flaying.[3]
