Books

TV series Season 1

Drogon is one of the dragons born in the Dothraki Sea. Commanded by Daenerys Targaryen, he is named for her dead husband, Drogo.

Drogon is believed to be the reincarnation of Balerion the Black Dread, but Daenerys decided to give him a new name for his new life.[1]

The largest and most aggressive of Daenerys's three dragons, Daenerys is having problems reining him in.

Appearance

His scales are black, his horns and spinal plates blood red and his eyes are smoldering red pits. [2].

His flame is black fire shot with red and the wash of its heat can be felt 30 feet away. [3]. His wing flap sounds like the clap of thunder. [4]. He bleeds black blood [5].

As of A Dance With Dragons his wings stretch 20 feet from tip to tip, black as jet [6].

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Drogon's egg was black as the midnight sea, alive with scarlet ripples and swirls.

Mirri Maz Duur proclaimed that in order to bring new life one must give life. Daenerys burned Drogo's body, along with the maegi Mirri Maz Duur herself and the three eggs to give life to Drogon and his brothers Viserion and Rhaegal.[7]

A Clash of Kings

When Daenerys arrives in Qarth, Drogon along with the other dragons are a marvel to the inhabitants of the ancient city.[8][9][10] Drogon is on her shoulder when she enters Qarth.

When Daenerys receives the news from Quhuru Mo of the Usurper's death black Drogon is seated in her lap, he hisses and pale smoke rises before Daenerys’s face like a veil.

When Daenerys entered the House of the Undying, she had Drogon accompany her. Once inside, Drogon reacted to the visions that Daenerys had, obviously sharing them with her. When they came upon the Undying, Drogon defended Daenerys by attacking the pulsating heart that stood at the center of the room, thereby slaying the Undying. This allowed Daenerys to escape the House and seemed to have seriously damaged the House itself.[11]

A Storm of Swords

Drogon is slightly larger than the size of a small dog. Drogon was part of the payment that Daenerys agreed to pay for all the Unsullied in Astapor. However, once she had received the Unsullied, she ordered the Good Masters killed and Drogon returned to Daenerys.[12]

A Feast for Crows

Tales start to reach Westeros of dragons.[13]

A Dance with Dragons

A man appeared before Daenerys in her throne room, carrying a sack with bones in it, claiming it was his child Hazzea and that Drogon had killed and eaten her.[14] He calls Drogon the winged shadow. Horrified, Daenerys ordered all three dragons to be captured and imprisoned in a pit inside of her Great Pyramid.

Viserion and Rhaegal were eventually chained (though not without cost) in a makeshift dragonpit in the Great Pyramid but Drogon escaped and disappeared.

When the fighting pits were re-opened, Drogon appeared, drawn by the noise and smell of blood. Drogon descended into the pit and killed the boar that was present. An animal handler named Harghaz attacked Drogon with a long spear and came close to slaying Drogon. Daenerys, seeing her "child" in peril, ran to him just when Drogon killed Harghaz. After much difficulty, losing her hair to fire once again, Daenerys managed to mount Drogon and flew away on his back.[15]

Drogon took Dany to his lair in the Dothraki Sea, where they were later discovered by the khalasar of Khal Jhaqo.[16]
