Eddison Tollet, better known as Dolorous Edd, is a member of the Night's Watch and steward of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont.

Appearance

Ben Crompton as Dolorous Edd Tollett at Craster's Keep (Tv show)

Eddison is very thin.[1] He is dour, and grey-haired.[2]

History

Dolorous Edd appears to have been born to a lesser branch of the House Tollet, as he speaks of being raised in a crude house such as the poorer of the smallfolk might have. He was recruited to the Night's Watch by Yoren.

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Tollett was part of the expedition north of the Wall.[3]

A Storm of Swords

He survived the fight with the Others at the Fist of the First Men. He was among the survivors to make it back to Craster's Keep. After the death of Lord Commander Mormont during the mutiny over food, Edd fled with Grenn, Giant and other loyalists back to the Wall. When the Weeper started his assault near Shadow Tower, Bowen Marsh assembled the garrison of Castle Black, along with Edd, to aid Denys Mallister.

During the election of the new Lord Commander, Edd initially voted for himself but when Jon became a viable candidate, he backed him instead.[4]

A Dance with Dragons

Edd carries on his duties as the Lord Commander's Steward. Eventually, Jon Snow names him as chief steward of Long Barrow, where Jon sent the spearwives, under the command of Iron Emmett.[5]

Quotes

“The dead are likely dull fellows, full of tedious complaints—‘the ground’s too cold, my gravestone should be larger, why does he get more worms than I do...’” —Dolorous Edd[1]

“Once they figure a way to work a dead horse, we’ll be next. Likely I’ll be the first too. ‘Edd,’ they’ll say, ‘dying’s no excuse for laying down no more, so get on up and take this spear, you’ve got first watch tonight.’ Well, I shouldn’t be so gloomy. Might be I’ll die before they work it out.” —Dolorous Edd[6]
