Edmure Tully 273 AL - is the head of House Tully. He was Lord Paramount of the Riverlands and Lord of Riverrun. He has red-brown hair, like most Tullys, and grew a fierce beard. He is of medium height.[1]

Edmure Tully was born as the third child and only living son of Hoster Tully and Minisa Whent. His mother died when he was very young.

As a youth, he was known as hot-headed but good-hearted. He had a number of friends who had similar characteristics. He often went wenching and had a number of affairs. In one case, he had drunk too much and was unable to "perform". A singer, Tom of Sevens, made a mocking song about Edmure, which mentioned a "floppy fish", causing him to develop a dislike of singers in general.[2]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

During the War of the Five Kings Edmure took command of the Riverlands due to his father's illness. He heard that a Lannister army was massing at the Golden Tooth and had begun to gather his forces when he was dealt a crushing defeat by Ser Jaime Lannister, who took him prisoner.

While Ser Jaime besieged Riverrun, Edmure's nephew, Robb Stark, arrived at Riverrun with his northern host. Robb surprised and destroyed the Lannister army and Edmure was rescued.[3] After the news of the execution of Eddard Stark the northern lords proclaimed Robb Stark King of the North. The Riverlands lords, lead by Edmure, proclaimed Robb King of the Riverlands and swore him fealty.[4]

A Clash of Kings

He sheltered the common people in Riverrun when Tywin Lannister was burning and pillaging through the Riverlands, although this meant his supplies were drastically reduced.[5] Unknowingly in disregard of the orders he had received from King Robb, Edmure defended the crossing against the Lannisters, a fierce battle fought at Stone Mill where Gregor Clegane is pushed back. By doing so he unwittingly thwarted the plans of Robb, who had planned to allow Tywin to cross the river and then trap him between his and Edmure's army. By beating Tywin's army back, Edmure inflicted enough of a delay for messengers to reach Tywin with word of what was happening to the south, allowing Lannister to turn his army around and turn the tide at the Battle of the Blackwater[6][7]

A Storm of Swords

Edmure succeeded his father as Lord of Riverrun when Lord Hoster died. To make amends for his actions, Edmure offered to marry a daughter of Lord Walder Frey. Edmure had thought that Walder would offer him an ugly or half-witted girl just to spite him and Robb, but the girl chosen for him, Roslin, turned out to be beautiful. Shortly after Edmure and Roslin left to consummate the marriage, the Freys and Boltons attacked the guests. When Edmure awoke, his sister, Catelyn, and her son, King Robb, had been murdered with numerous others and he was prisoner of his father-in-law.

A Feast of Crows

With Edmure as their prisoner, the Freys besieged Riverrun, which had refused to surrender. It was being held by Edmure's uncle Ser Brynden Tully. In an attempt to coerce Ser Brynden, Ryman Frey set up a gallows and threatened to hang Edmure if Riverrun did not surrender. Every day Edmure was made to stand at the gallows but Brynden refused to surrender and Ryman did not make good on his threats. The siege continued without any major event until Ser Jaime Lannister arrived to take over command of the siege.

Ser Jaime sent Ryman back to the Twins and took Edmure as his own prisoner. He released him and offered Edmure a deal. As lord of Riverrun Edmure was Ser Brynden's liege lord. If he surrendered Riverrun the defenders would be free to go (without their weapons) and Edmure himself would become a comfortable prisoner at Casterly Rock. His wife, who was pregnant, would be allowed to live with him after giving birth, and the child would be given a small keep when he or she came of age. If Edmure would not agree to this deal, Jaime would make the riverlords, former vassals of Edmure who had bent the knee, attack Riverrun, destroy the castle and kill the surviving defenders. If Edmure and Roslin's child would be born, Jaime would send the child to him in a catapult. Afterward, Jaime leaves Edmure to his bath, with the sole company of Tom of Sevenstreams playing The Rains of Castamere[8]

Edmure left the besiegers and entered Riverrun. He delayed until the last moment before surrendering in order to allow his uncle to escape. After Riverrun was handed over, Edmure was sent west with an armed escort to begin a life as a hostage of House Lannister.

A Dance with Dragons

Jaime Lannister mentioned to Tytos Blackwood that after Roslin gives birth she and the child will be sent to join Edmure at Casterly Rock.
