Euron Greyjoy is a younger brother of Balon and is known as "Crow's Eye". He is captain of the Silence, a ship crewed entirely by mutes whose tongues Euron ripped out.

His personal coat-of-arms is a red eye with a black pupil beneath a black iron crown supported by two crows.[1]

Appearance and Character

Euron - by Pojypojy ©

Euron is pale and handsome with black hair and a dark beard. He wears a patch over his left eye, and is nicknamed "Crow's Eye".

According to his nephew, Theon, the patch conceals a "black eye shining with malice"[2]. His right eye is as blue as summer sky and is regarded as his "smiling eye". In addition, his lips are a pale blue, due to his propensity to drink shade of the evening. See also this collection of images.

He is a wildly unpredictable man, known for his delight in playing vicious mind games and waging psychological warfare on anyone around him. He is hated by all his brothers for this reason. He is a skilled warrior and manipulator, and is cunning, shrewd and ruthless.

History

At the outset of the Greyjoy Rebellion, Euron concocted a plan to sail into Lannisport and burn the Lannister fleet at anchor. The Iron Fleet, commanded by Euron's brother Victarion Greyjoy, followed the plan and successfully destroyed the Westerlands naval force.[3]

Some time after the war, he was sent away from the Iron Islands by Balon Greyjoy as punishment for seducing/raping Victarion's rock wife, and was warned never to return while Balon was alive. Victarion wanted to kill Euron and would have if not for the taboo against kinslaying.[4] He has several bastard children but does not have any regard for any of them.

Since his banishment the Silence has sailed, pillaged and raped all over the known world. Euron claims to have traveled to Asshai and even sailed the Smoking Sea and walked the smoking ruins of Valyria [5]. He once owned a dragons egg that he claims he tossed into the sea during one of his foul moods.[6]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

News came to Robb Stark from the Iron Islands via the captain of the Myraham that Euron Greyjoy had returned to Pyke upon the death of his brother and had claimed the Seastone Chair. Lord Botley objected to his claim and Euron had him drowned in a cask of seawater.[7]

A Feast for Crows

Euron returned to the isles the day after Balon's death. The timing of his return was questioned by some.[8] See also Balon Greyjoy/Theories He claimed to have reaved all over the world during his exile, including a trip to the feared ruins of Valyria. He also captured and holds hostage several warlocks of Qarth, who may have coached him in black magic.

At the Kingsmoot called by his brother Aeron Damphair, Euron promised to conquer all Westeros for the ironborn using dragons, which he claimed he could bind to his will with the Dragon Horn. He was elected king, besting his niece Asha, Victarion, and other contenders.[5] Euron had Baelor Blacktyde killed when the man refused to accept him as his king.

Euron began raids upon the Reach. These raids were wildly successful, and Euron weakened possible rivals by giving lands and titles to key followers of theirs - as he did after Victarion's success in the Battle of the Shield Islands. However, he failed to move the ironborn beyond raiding, as they were reluctant to embark on a dangerous journey in search of dragons. Instead, he sent Victarion and the Iron Fleet to find Daenerys Targaryen, court her in his name, and bring her and her dragons to Westeros.[6]

A Dance with Dragons

Euron gives Victarion the Dragon Horn to take with him to Meereen. Victarion again remembers that "Euron's gifts are poisoned" when he hears the red priest Moqorro state that those who blow the horn die.

According to Moqorro, he sees many threats to Daenerys in the flames. He can only see their shadows and claims the one that casts the most danger is:

"A tall and twisted thing with one black eye and ten long arms, sailing on a sea of blood". [9]

Quotes

"I am the storm, my lord. The first storm, and the last. "[6]

- In reply to Rodrik Harlaw warning him about a storm.

"Perhaps we can fly. All of us. How will we ever know unless we leap from some tall tower? No man ever truly knows what he can do unless he dares to leap."[6]

Quotes about Euron

"Balon was mad, Aeron is madder, and Euron is the maddest of them all."

Baelor Blacktyde. [6]

"Euron's gifts are poisoned."

- Victarion Greyjoy [6]
