The Battle of Torrhen's Square was fought outside of Torrhen's Square in the North.
Prelude
Theon Greyjoy and Dagmer Cleftjaw plotted between them to take Winterfell. In order to draw the garrison away from the castle, Theon sent Dagmer with the main force of ironborn to besiege Torrhen's Square, but not take it. When the garrison, led by Ser Rodrik Cassel left Winterfell, Theon fell on the castle and took it. Dagmer was still besieging Torrhen's Square when the northmen response arrived.
Battle
Ser Rodrik knew the land intimately while Dagmer did not. Ser Rodrik led the gathered northmen to victory. The ironborn were not disciplined enough to stand a charge by mounted horsemen and their shield wall broke. Dagmer led the remnants of his force back to the Stony Shore.[1]
Aftermath
With the threat to Torrhen's Square diminished, Ser Rodrik turned his attention back to Winterfell, which he besieged.
