Appearance and Character
Garlan is a taller, bearded version of his brother Ser Loras Tyrell. He is five years older than Ser Loras.[3] He is an exceptionally skilled swordsman, preferring to train against three or four swordsmen, so as to better prepare himself for actual battle,[4] but his lack of interest in gaining glory makes him less famous than his younger brother, Ser Loras.
History
Garlan was plump in his youth. His elder brother Willas dubbed him the Gallant to save him from the indignity that befell an uncle, nicknamed Garth the Gross.[5] He was married to Lady Leonette of House Fossoway.
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
Ser Garlan took part in the Battle of the Blackwater, playing the part of Renly Baratheon by dressing in his armor, to scare the ignorant men-at-arms among Stannis Baratheon's army.[6] He led the Tyrell-Lannister army's vanguard and slew his opposite number, Ser Guyard Morrigen, in single combat.[7] He was raised to Lord of Brightwater Keep, the former seat of House Florent, after the battle.[3]
A Storm of Swords
Ser Garlan said kind words to Tyrion Lannister during the wedding of Margaery Tyrell and King Joffrey I while attending the nuptials with his wife, Leonette Fossoway. Garlan said Tyrion was "made to do great deeds" and praised Tyrion's plans which helped save King's Landing from Stannis Baratheon's forces.
While the Kingsguard met in the White Sword Tower, Garlan guarded Tommen I.[8]
A Feast for Crows
Ser Garlan was preparing to take Brightwater Keep when news of the ironborn raid on the Shield Islands reached him. He began gathering men from across the Reach to retake the islands.[9]
