Gedmund Peake, called Gedmund Great-Axe, was a knight from House Peake who became commander of the royal fleet, and later lord admiral and master of ships during the regency of King Aegon III Targaryen. He was the younger brother of Lord Peake and uncle of Unwin Peake of Starpike.[1][2]

Character

Gedmund Great-Axe had prowess as a warrior but little experience with ships.[1]

History

When Lord Unwin Peake became Hand of the King, in 133 AC he made his uncle Gedmund commander of the royal fleet with the more experienced Ned Bean as his second-in-command. During the Daughters' War, Gedmund and Ned were sent against Racallio Ryndoon, the self-proclaimed King of the Narrow Sea. The commander became so seasick during the voyage, however, that sailors called him "Gedmund Green-Sick". When it was learned that Racallio had allied with the Sealord of Braavos and the Archon of Tyrosh, Gedmund remained at Tarth to await further instructions from Unwin. Lord Alyn Velaryon protested they would lose time, however, and left Gedmund behind to continue south. The Braavosi ships in the Stepstones were then defeated in Lord Alyn's attack, an action which outraged Unwin. The Hand recalled Gedmund's fleet from Tarth to defend the Gullet and Blackwater Bay from Braavosi retaliation.[1]

Gedmund remained in his post after his nephew resigned as Hand in 134 AC.[3] After the attempted coup against the Rogare family and the King's Hand, Lord Thaddeus Rowan in 135 AC, Gedmund was named lord admiral and master of ships to appease Lord Peake and his supporters.[3][2]

Quotes

They are my fleets now, and Baela's monkey is more suited to command them than Nuncle Gedmund.[1]
