Gerardys was a maester who served Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on Dragonstone. He later became the Grand Maester of Queen Rhaenyra, and sat on her black council.

In the television adaptation House of the Dragon, Gerardys is portrayed by Phil Daniels.[1]

Character

By 120 AC, Gerardys was already an older man renowned for his skills as a healer.[2]

History

Gerardys served Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on Dragonstone. He also flew with Prince Daemon Targaryen to help his wife Lady Laena Velaryon after a difficult childbirth, but they arrived too late. When King Viserys I Targaryen fell and sliced his hand open on the Iron Throne, Rhaenyra flew Gerardys, accounted a more gifted healer, to King's Landing after Grand Maester Mellos was unsuccessful in treating the laceration. Gerardys amputated two of the king's fingers, saving his life.[2]

After Mellos passed away, Rhaenyra recommended that Gerardys take his place as Grand Maester. Queen Alicent, on the other hand, wanted Maester Alfador, who served House Hightower, named to the office. Beset from both sides, Viserys chose neither, reminding both his wife and daughter that the Citadel would decide who filled the office. Archmaester Orwyle was in the end selected by the conclave as the new Grand Maester.[2][N 1]

Dance of the Dragons

When Grand Maester Orwyle arrived on Dragonstone to try and negotiate for Rhaenyra to accept Aegon II Targaryen as the king, Rhaenyra angrily removed his chain of office from his neck and gave it to Gerardys, who she said was a true leal servant. She then sent Orwyle back to King's Landing.[3]

When Rhaenyra took King's Landing, she had Grand Maester Orwyle thrown in the dungeon and sent a raven to the Citadel, informing them that her own trusted maester, Gerardys would be her Grand Maester. After the revelation that the Two Betrayers had gone over to the enemy, only Gerardys and the Hand of the Queen, Lord Corlys Velaryon, spoke in defense of the remaining dragonseeds, Nettles and Addam Velaryon, who the queen feared would betray her too. Their words failed to move Rhaenyra, who ordered the arrest of Ser Addam. Lord Corlys discreetly alerted Addam, who fled the city on Seasmoke. Lord Corlys was imprisoned for his actions, and Rhaenyra also started to question Gerardys's loyalty, as he, like Corlys, had spoken up for the dragonseeds, though he denied any knowledge of the Hand's actions. Having lost the complete trust of Queen Rhaenyra, Gerardys was ordered to return to Dragonstone, being spared the dungeons due to his past leal service.[4]

Gerardys remained on Dragonstone, only to be taken captive during the fall of Dragonstone by King Aegon II Targaryen and his supporters. Ser Marston Waters surprised the Grand Maester in the rookery, preventing him from sending a warning to Rhaenyra. He later offered milk of the poppy to Aegon II who was in agony, but Aegon refused, fearing it was poisoned, stating that Gerardys was his sister's creature. Aegon had Gerardys hanged slowly with the very chain of office bestowed on him by Rhaenyra. He kicked in the air as he was raised gradually off the ground, and when near death he was let down to catch his breath before being hauled up again. After the third time, he was disemboweled and dangled before the wounded Sunfyre so the dragon could feast on his legs and innards, though King Aegon commanded a part of Gerardys remain to welcome his sister.[5][N 2]

When Rhaenyra fled King's Landing, the fall of Dragonstone was unknown to her. Upon her arrival at Duskendale she sent a raven to Dragonstone informing the garrison of her planned return and to send a ship for them, but when no reply was forthcoming, Rhaenyra grew more suspicious of Gerardys. Rhaenyra had to sell her crown to raise coin to buy passage on a ship, and upon her arrival to the island, she and her entourage were escorted up to the castle, where hanging from the battlements beside the gatehouse was the burned corpse of Ser Robert Quince next to the bodies of Dragonstone's captain of the guard, master-at-arms, steward, and finally, the upper torso of Gerardys, his entrails dangling from his torn belly.[5]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Varys mentions to Tyrion Lannister that Aegon II fed Grand Maester Gerardys to his dragon.[6]

Behind the scenes

Gerardys was possibly named after Vince Gerardis, an agent of George R. R. Martin.

Notes

  1. The novella The Rogue Prince identifies Gerardys as the Grand Maester who replaced Mellos in the council. This was an error (question and clarification), and The World of Ice & Fire states the maester was Orwyle.
  2. The novella The Princess and the Queen states Rhaenyra's maester on Dragonstone is Hunnimore, who is not executed by Aegon II, while in Fire & Blood the maester is always Gerardys and Hunnimore is never mentioned, which means his canon status is uncertain.
