Greyguard is a castle along the Wall abandoned by the Night's Watch. It lies west of Stonedoor and east of Sentinel Stand.[1]

Layout

Greyguard has largely collapsed into ruin.[2] Huge stone steps lead to the top of the Wall above.[3]

History

Greyguard has been abandoned for two hundred years, and a section of the steps collapsed a century ago.[3]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, plans to re-garrison the castle with men from the Shadow Tower, but on the advice of Qhorin Halfhand, they instead choose Stonedoor due to Greyguard's dire straits.[2]

A Storm of Swords

The party of wildlings that Jon Snow attaches himself to descends from the Wall at Greyguard. Once at the castle, Styr warns his raiders that they will need to kill any kneelers they meet.[3]

Prior to their assaults on Castle Black and the Wall, wildlings hack at the gates of Greyguard.[4]

A Dance with Dragons

Jon Snow, now Lord Commander, decides to re-garrison Greyguard with thirty men—ten from Castle Black, ten from the Shadow Tower and ten from King Stannis Baratheon—under the command of Janos Slynt. However, Janos refuses to follow Jon's orders, the second time publicly, which leads Jon to execute him at Castle Black.[5]

Jon later considers Ser Alliser Thorne as Janos's replacement, but he instead orders Greyguard to be re-garrisoned with a grizzled steward from the Shadow Tower in command.[6]

Quotes

The fort is in a sorry state, admittedly. You will restore it as best you can. Start by clearing back the forest. Steal stones from the structures that have collapsed to repair those still standing.[5]
