This High Septon, whose birth name was Pate, was appointed High Septon after King Baelor I Targaryen informed the Most Devout that the Seven had revealed the new High Septon's identity to him.
History
During his reign King Baelor I Targaryen had the man, a stonemason by trade, named as the High Septon. He could carve stonework so beautifully that Baelor believed him to be the Smith in human form. While a fantastic stonecarver, this High Septon could not read, write or recite any prayers and must have been ill suited to his new vocation High Septon.[2]
It was rumored that to spare the realm embarrassment, Prince Viserys Targaryen used his position as Hand of the King to have him poisoned, thereby ridding the realm of an ineffectual High Septon.[2] He survived only for a year before a fever took him.[3]
