Ser Hosteen Frey is a member of House Frey. He is the sixth son of Lord Walder Frey and the first one born of Lord Walder's third wife, Amarei Crakehall. He is married to Bellena Hawick.[1] Hosteen is also a seasoned soldier and the fiercest fighter of Lord Walder's brood.

Character and Appearance

Hosteen is a husky man with a square face.[2] He is brawny with a jut of jaw and arms thick with muscle. He is compared to a bull, slow to anger but implacable when aroused.[3]. While he favors his mother's family and is considered the strongest of all the Freys, [2] Hosteen is also thought of as very dim and stupid. [4]

History

Ser Hosteen participated in the Tourney at Lannisport, the tourney that was held to celebrate King Robert I's victory in the Greyjoy Rebellion. He was defeated by the eventual champion, Lord Jorah Mormont[5] Ser Hosteen rode in the tourney held at King's Landing in 297 AL. He was unhorsed by Ser Loras Tyrell.[6]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Hosteen attends the Tourney of the Hand in King's Landing with five of his brothers. He is one of the Freys placed under the command of Robb Stark after the end of the parley.[6]

A Clash of Kings

Ser Hosteen is a member of the Frey contingent that is a part of Lord Roose Bolton's army at Harrenhal. He claims to have been captured by Lord Tywin Lannister once.[2]

A Storm of Swords

Ser Hosteen is among the Freys that meet Ser Jaime Lannister when he arrives at Harrenhal with the Brave Companions. Ser Hosteen is introduced to Lady Catelyn Tully at the Twins on the eve of Lord Edmure Tully's wedding.[7] During the Red Wedding Hosteen kills Lucas Blackwood.

A Feast for Crows

Ser Aenys Frey and Ser Hosteen command the two thousand Frey swords that are sent with Lord Roose Bolton to retake the North.[8]

A Dance with Dragons

Ser Hosteen along with Aenys Frey are present at the wedding of Ramsay Bolton to Arya Stark. In the worsening cold, he loses an ear to frostbite. When several men at arms are murdered Hosteen at first suspects Theon Greyjoy but later suspects Wyman Manderly of ordering the deaths. Ser Jared Frey, Symond Frey and Rhaegar Frey went to White Harbour to treat with Wyman and have not been seen since, to which Hosteen suspects foul play. When Little Walder Frey is found dead, Hosteen accuses Lord Manderly, who denies the charge while insulting House Frey. This enrages Ser Hosteen, who attacks Wyman and would have killed him if not for the intervention of Manderly knights.

In order to prevent a battle inside the castle between his own army, Roose Bolton sends Hosteen and Aenys Frey in the vanguard to attack Stannis Baratheon's army.

The Winds of Winter

The Frey vanguard falls into a pit trap set by Mors Umber. Aenys Frey is killed, placing Ser Hosteen in command of the Frey force sent to battle Stannis. This news pleases Stannis Baratheon as Ser Hosteen is not very bright, to the point that Stannis refers to him as Ser Stupid.[9]

Quotes

-"White Harbor does not fear to ride with you, Ser Hosteen. Lead us out, and my knights will ride behind you." - "Close enough to drive a lance through my back, aye. Where are my kin, Manderly? Tell me that." [10]

Conversation between Wyman Manderly and Hosteen Frey.

Quotes about Hosteen

"Angry foes do not concern me. Anger makes men stupid, and Hosteen Frey was stupid to begin with, if half of what I have heard of him is true. Let him come."

-Stannis Baratheon [11]
