A Clash of Kings
Ramsay Snow, the Bastard of Bolton, leads the Dreadfort's garrison in betraying Ser Rodrik Cassel's army of Stark loyalists in a battle at Winterfell. Although Bran and Rickon Stark hide during the sack of Winterfell and later escape,[1][2] they are presumed dead.[3]
A Storm of Swords
Lord Tywin Lannister weds his son Tyrion to Sansa Stark in King's Landing,[4] hoping that Tyrion can one day claim Winterfell.[5]
Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort and Ramsay's father, betrays Robb Stark, King in the North, in the Red Wedding.[6] The Iron Throne names Roose the new Warden of the North and legitimizes Ramsay. Steelshanks Walton departs King's Landing with a girl claimed to be Arya Stark; she is to marry Ramsay Bolton and cement House Bolton's claim to Winterfell.[7][8][9] Tywin, however, hopes the Boltons will exhaust themselves fighting the ironborn, allowing Tyrion to later claim Winterfell.[7]
A Dance with Dragons
Ramsay signs himself as Lord of Winterfell in a letter sent to Deepwood Motte.[10] Roose gathers many northern bannermen to Winterfell, the ruins of which are partially repaired. Ramsay weds the fake Arya, actually Jeyne Poole, in Winterfell's godswood.[11]
During the fierce blizzard, Theon Greyjoy and Jeyne escape Winterfell with the aid of Abel's spearwives[12] and are found by Mors Umber.[13]
House Bolton of Winterfell at the end of the third century
The known Boltons of Winterfell during the timespan of the events described in A Song of Ice and Fire are:
- Lord Ramsay Bolton, the new Lord of Winterfell, Lord of the Hornwood, and heir to the Dreadfort.
- Lady {Donella Manderly}, Ramsay's first wife, Lady of the Hornwood as the widow of Lord Halys Hornwood. Perishes after being imprisoned without food.
- Lady "Arya Stark", actually Jeyne Poole, Ramsay's second wife. Currently in custody of King Stannis Baratheon.
Quotes
Lady Arya's sobs do us more harm than all of Lord Stannis's swords and spears. If the Bastard means to remain Lord of Winterfell, he had best teach his wife to laugh.[14]
