History

Dunk spotted the Estermont turtle among the heraldry present at the Ashford Tourney. Ser Gunthor Estermont rode in the lists.

Robert Baratheon once spent a fortnight on Estermont with his mother's family. There he bedded a widowed cousin he used to play with as a child.[4]

Old Lord Estermont was one of the insulting matches Lord Doran Martell proposed to his daughter Arianne.

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

On the outset of the War of the Five Kings, Lord Estermont, who is possibly Eldon Estermont,[5] declares for his kinsman and liege, King Renly Baratheon. The Estermonts' sea turtle is seen by Catelyn Tully in Renly's camp. When he is preparing for battle against his brother Stannis Baratheon, Renly decides Lord Estermont would command the reserve of his army. The Estermonts turn to Stannis after Renly's death, however, along with most other storm lords.

Ser Cortnay Penrose acknowledges the presence of the great lords Estermont, Errol and Varner during his parley with Stannis. Lord Estermont recommends against storming the walls of Storm's End, believing it would cost too many lives. He suggests a duel against Cortnay, or a long siege to starve them. He refuses to turn to the religion of the Lord of Light, and asks to fight under the crowned stag banner instead of the flaming heart.

The banner of House Estermont is spotted in the van of Stannis's army as it approaches King's Landing. Lord Estermont and his men fight in the Battle of the Blackwater. Aemon, Alyn, and Lord Estermont are made prisoner and bend the knee to Joffrey Baratheon after Stannis's defeat. Lomas and Andrew Estermont escape the battle, and lead part of the Greenstone men in remaining loyal to Stannis after the Blackwater.

A Storm of Swords

Lord Estermont is a guest at Joffrey's royal wedding. He declares at Tyrion Lannister's trial that he saw Tyrion pick up the chalice as Joffrey was dying and poured the remaining wine to the floor.

Ser Andrew Estermont helps Davos Seaworth smuggle Edric Storm out of Dragonstone. He sails away with the boy, commanding his escort.

The Estermont banner is seen at Castle Black after Stannis's arrival.

A Feast for Crows

Lord Qyburn reports to Cersei Lannister that Lord Eldon Estermont has married Sylva Santagar - unknown to those in King's Landing, this was punishment for Sylva's part in Arianne Martell's attempted coup.

A Dance with Dragons

Marq Mandrake takes the island of Estermont during the landing of the Golden Company.[6][7]

House Estermont at the end of the third century

The known Estermonts during the timespan of the events described in A Song of Ice and Fire are:

  • possibly {Lord Estermont}, former Lord of Greenstone. An ancient man. Old-fashioned and cautious. Would have died in 300 AC.[8]
  • Lord Eldon Estermont, Lord of Greenstone.[9]

With uncertain relation to Eldon are also:

Because of contradictory information, there are different possibilities for the Estermont family tree; see House Estermont/Theories. It can be said with certainty that Cassana Estermont had two brothers.

Unspecified Estermont:

  • An unnamed female cousin, whose father and husband died during the Siege of Storm's End. She was of an age with her cousin Robert, with whom she would play when they were both still very young.
