House Frey of the Crossing is a noble house of the Riverlands. Their main seat is the Twins, a pair of castles on each back of the Green Fork of the Trident that serves as a vital bridge across the river. The lord of the house is called the Lord of the Crossing. The strategic location of the Twins has allowed the house to become quite wealthy. Under their current lord, Walder Frey, they have grown greatly in both size and power.

Their sigil is two blue towers united by a bridge on silver-grey, representing the Twins.[1] Their motto is not mentioned in the books. Most Freys tend to share the weasely appearance of their common ancestor, Lord Walder.

History

House Frey is one of the younger houses in Westeros, dating back some six centuries when its founder was awarded lands and nobility. The founding Frey had a vision of buiding a great bridge spanning the Green Fork of the Trident and began its construction. His grandson ultimately finished the bridge's construction and built wooden keeps on both sides as well. Later generations replaced the timber keeps with identical stone keeps that were named the Twins. A large tower was constructed in the middle of the bridge and called the Water Tower.[2] The Twins' defensible construction and strategic location allowed the Freys to prosper by extracting tolls for passage across the river. The Freys grew into one of the richest and most powerful houses of the Trident. Their quick rise to prominence has caused other powerful houses to look down on them as upstarts.

After the War of Conquest, House Frey joined the other Riverlords in swearing to House Tully. During the long reign of Lord Walder, the house exploded in size as Walder and his descendants sired many offspring. Under Walder's leadership, the Freys exploited their advantages to the fullest, delaying their answer to House Tully's call during Robert's Rebellion and the War of the Five Kings until it served their purpose. Walder secured a marriage contract with Robb Stark, linking the house to the King of the North, until Robb broke the contract. Walder secretly negotiated with House Lannister and betrayed the Starks and Tullys at the Red Wedding. Thereafter, Walder Frey's second son was given the lordship of Riverrun of which House Tully was dispossed. But other nobles and the common folk scorned them for breaking the sacred guest right.

  • Lord Walder Frey (b. 208 AL), is the current Lord of the Crossing. An ancient, prideful, and greedy man, he has ruled his house for decades and sired over a hundred descendants. Though he stresses family loyalty, his family jockeys ruthlessly for his favor, naming their sons Walder and daughters Walda in an attempt to please him. Walder his survived many wives:

  • Lord Ambrose Butterwell held the Whitewalls Tourney to celebrate his marriage to his new lady wife who was a member of House Frey.
  • Lord Frey attended the Whitewalls Tourney, accompanied by his daughters, his four year old son, his brother, Ser Franklyn Frey and his nephew.
  • Ser Franklyn defeated Ser Harbert Paege in the lists after five tilts.
  • Ser Addam Frey, the cousin of Lord Ambrose's bride, was defeated by Ser Uthor Underleaf at the Whitewalls Tourney.

A Song of Ice and Fire

  • When dismissing the idea of turning to her father's bannermen to deal with the Lannisters, Catelyn Tully thinks of "irascible Lord Frey, who had outlived seven wives and filled his twin castles with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and bastards and grand bastards as well."
  • There is a group of about twenty Frey men in the inn where Catelyn seizes Tyrion Lannister. They fail to help her to bring the Imp to Winterfell, choosing to go to the Twins immediately to report the incident.
  • Six Freys enter the lists at the Tourney of the Hand: Ser Jared, Ser Hosteen, Ser Danwell, Ser Emmon, Ser Theo and Ser Perwyn, as well as some of his bastards including Walder Rivers. They fared poorly, with Hosteen falling to Ser Loras Tyrell and Danwell to a Hedge Knight.
  • On his march south to fight the Lannisters, Robb Stark demanded that Lord Frey let him use the crossing with his army. He was received by Ser Stevron at the doors, and later Catelyn negotiated with Walder a deal: The crossing and their swords in exchange for Robb and Arya Stark marrying a Frey, Catelyn taking two more as wards and Robb taking yet another as his squire.
  • Robb acknowledged that the Freys fought bravely at the Battle of the Whispering Wood.
  • Many Freys including Ser Stevron, Ser Ryman, Black Walder, Ser Perwyn, Olyvar and Martyn Rivers, joined Robb in his campaign through the Westerlands. Stevron died after the Battle of Oxcross.
  • Other Freys, including Ser Aenys, Ser Jared, Ser Hosteen, Ser Danwell, Elmar and Ronel Rivers were part of Roose Bolton's army. Jared, Hosteen, Danwell and Ronel were made prisoners by Lord Tywin during the Battle of the Green Fork, and were freed afterwards.
  • Big Walder and Little Walder are welcomed to Winterfell, although they are not much to the liking of Bran Stark. They are spared by Theon Greyjoy and later by Ramsay Snow when Winterfell is taken.
  • Ser Perwyn accompanied Lady Catelyn to his voyage south to deal with kings Renly and Stannis.
  • The Freys left Robb's army after he married Jeyne Westerling.
  • Hoster Tully refused a Frey bride for his son Edmure.
  • Jon Arryn refused to foster Lord Walder's grandsons at the Eyrie.
  • The Freys conspired with Lord Tywin and Bolton to organize the Red Wedding, where they broke the guest right and betrayed Robb and their allies.
  • After the Red Wedding, the Freys were generally considered accursed in Westeros. They also became the target of attacks of outlaws and people seeking revenge.
  • Petyr, Merrett and Ser Ryman were seized and hanged by the revived Lady Catelyn.
  • House Frey can field a thousand knights and three thousand foot.
  • During the Tourney at Harrenhal, a squire of a member of this house accosted Howland Reed. The knight of House Frey was later defeated by the Knight of the Laughing Tree and told to teach his squire honor.
  • Dead soldiers with bearing the colors of House Frey have washed up on the Quiet Isle. According to the Elder Brother, they are buried next to their enemies.
  • According to Queen Cersei, Lord Wyman Manderly was on the verge of agreeing to ally himself with the Boltons after he agreed to marry both of his granddaughters to members of House Frey and open his port to Lannister shipping.
  • Houses Erenford, Charlton and Haigh are among the lesser houses sworn to the Twins.
