History
House Merryweather was once a powerful and rich family. During a feast King Aerys II Targaryen held when Cersei Lannister came to court for the first time, Lord Owen Merryweather talked about raising taxes on wine, which led to Lord Rykker making a joke about Lord Tywin Lannister's ability to shit gold.
Aerys II stripped the Merryweathers of their lands and exiled Lord Owen in 282 AC for his failures as Hand of the King to prevent Robert's Rebellion.[1][4] Owen was known as "the horn-of-plenty hand."[5]
King Robert I restored their title and some of their lands when he took the Iron Throne,[5] but the family's wealth and status have not completely recovered. Lord Orton Merryweather is not as rich and powerful as his grandfather, Owen.[6]

Taena plays a significant part during the start of King Tommen Baratheon's reign, being a confidant, adviser and sporadic sex partner of Cersei. The queen offers to foster Russell Merryweather in King's Landing, which Taena says she will consider.
Cersei names Lord Orton to her small council as her justiciar (Master of Laws).[7] Cersei later raises him to be the new Hand of the King after she demotes Harys Swyft to Lord Treasurer.[8] After Cersei's imprisonment by the Faith, Taena and Orton flee King's Landing and return to Longtable.[9]
