House Tarth of Evenfall Hall is a noble house from Evenfall Hall in the stormlands. The family rules Tarth, a beautiful island northeast of Shipbreaker Bay that controls the Straits of Tarth between the island and mainland Westeros. They are one of the main houses sworn to Storm's End.[1]

Their blazon is quartered with yellow suns on rose and white crescents and azure.[2][3] Their words are not known. Lord Tarth is sometimes called the Evenstar.[4][5]

History

Ancestors of House Tarth were once kings, and the head of the family is known as "the Evenstar", which they claim dates back to the dawn of days.[6] The island of Tarth came under the dominion of the House Durrandon when the Storm King Durran the Fair married the daughter of Tarth's king, Edwyn Evenstar.[7]

Tarth was the first region of the stormlands conquered during the Andal invasion, but peace between the Andals and First Men was eventually achieved when the Storm Kings and their bannermen intermarried with the Andals.[8] The Tarths have Andal ancestry and have ties with Houses Durrandon, Baratheon, and Targaryen.[6]

At the start of the Dance of the Dragons, Ser Otto Hightower believed that the Evenstar of Tarth would be among the narrow sea powers who would support Rhaenyra Targaryen.[4]

Ser Quentyn Tarth participated in the tourney at Ashford Meadow.[9]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Ser Endrew Tarth, stationed in the Shadow Tower, is recalled to Castle Black to train the new recruits as master-at-arms after Ser Alliser Thorne is sent away.[10]

A Clash of Kings

When Stannis Baratheon sends Davos Seaworth to rally the stormlords, the Tarths only agree to a midnight meeting in a grove.[11] They instead declare for Renly Baratheon during the War of the Five Kings.[12]

Lord Selwyn Tarth's daughter, Brienne, wins the melee at Bitterbridge, defeating Ser Ronnet Connington and Ser Loras Tyrell. As a reward King Renly grants her a place in his Rainbow Guard.[2] Brienne is forced to flee with Lady Catelyn Stark when she is suspected as the killer of Renly, who dies in her arms.[13] She then goes into Catelyn's service.

A Storm of Swords

Following Catelyn's orders, Brienne escapes with Ser Jaime Lannister and Ser Cleos Frey from Riverrun.[14]

Ser Endrew Tarth dies fighting the Weeper's wildlings at the Bridge of Skulls.[15]

In King's Landing Brienne is entrusted by Jaime to look for Catelyn's daughters, and he gives her a Valyrian steel sword named Oathkeeper.[16]

A Feast for Crows

Brienne unsuccessfully searches the crownlands and riverlands for Sansa Stark. While following Arya Stark's track, Brienne is captured by the brotherhood without banners and is sentenced to death by Lady Stoneheart, the revived Catelyn Tully.[17]

A Dance with Dragons

Brienne recruits Ser Jaime Lannister at Pennytree, ostensibly to help in saving Sansa Stark from Sandor Clegane.[18]
