A Dance with Dragons
The House of Zhak is hostile to Daenerys Targaryen's rule over Meereen after she takes control of the city. Its household is suspected of being members of the Sons of the Harpy.[2][3] Skahaz mo Kandaq reports to Daenerys the Zhaks and Merreqs wish to leave the city. Skahaz suggests they might go to their estates in the hills, but Daenerys is not convinced and thinks they will join the Wise Masters of Yunkai against her. She permits them to leave the city but their gold and food supplies must remain in Meereen.[4]
Before Meereen fell, a Zhak took the maidenhead of his slave bedwarmer and got her pregnant. The woman eventually marries a freedmen who pleads his case in front of Daenerys. He asks for the Zhak to be gelded for rape and to be given a purse of gold to raise the nobleman's bastard as his own. As the woman was Zhak's property at the time, Daenerys judges against the gelding but grants the freedmen the gold.[2]
Skahaz informs Daenerys that Hizdahr zo Loraq was seen visiting the pyramid of Zhak.[1] When several Meereenese ships join the blockade of Meereen, Skahaz presents Daenerys a list with the names of the Meereenese captains and which families they belong too, with the House of Zhak among the names.[1]
One man of Zhak told Daenerys that palanquins are popular because horses befoul the streets, but slaves do not.[5]
To ensure peace in Meereen, Daenerys has every noble family of Meereen who is of dubious loyalty send her a child as a hostage. These children are made her cupbearers.[4] A Zhak child is among them.[6]
