Ice is a greatsword, as wide across as a man's hand and taller than an adolescent Robb Stark. Its Valyrian steel blade has a dark and smokey appearance.[2]
History
The name "Ice" is a legacy from the Age of Heroes, and predates the current sword. About four hundred years before King Robert I Baratheon's reign, the Valyrian steel greatsword was spell-forged in Valyria and acquired by House Stark, who named it after that legacy.[1]
In 50 AC Lord Walton Stark used Ice to execut Ser Olyver Bracken who rebelled against the Night's Watch.[3]
Lord Cregan Stark used Ice to behead Ser Gyles Belgrave and Lord Larys Strong in King's Landing during the Hour of the Wolf.[4]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Lord Eddard Stark uses Ice to execute Gared, a deserter from the Night's Watch.[2] Ned then cleans the blade in the godswood of Winterfell.[1]
After Eddard is arrested for treason in King's Landing, Ser Ilyn Payne, the King's Justice, uses the blade to execute Eddard himself at the Great Sept of Baelor.[5]
A Storm of Swords
Ilyn carries the blade until Lord Tywin Lannister takes it from him and has Tobho Mott re-forge Ice into two longswords, Widow's Wail, and the longsword later called Oathkeeper.[6][7]
