The Isle of Ravens is an isle located inside the Citadel in Oldtown. A weathered wooden drawbridge links the isle to the bank of the Honeywine river.

There is a castle on the isle called the Ravenry. It is the oldest building in the Citadel. [1] As the name suggests ravens are housed there, there is a rookery for black ravens and a rookery for white ravens - they quarrel so are kept apart. The white in the west tower, the black in the north tower.

History

In the Age of Heroes the Ravenry was supposedly the stronghold of a pirate lord who sat there robbing ships as they came down the Honeywine. [1] The drawbridge has not been raised in living memory. [1]

The Ravenry

The castle’s walls are covered in moss and creeping vines and in place of archers ravens walk its battlements. Inside the castle’s walls it is cool and dim.

An ancient weirwood fills the Ravenry’s yard, as it has since the stones had been raised. The carved face on is trunk has grown over by the same purple moss that hangs heavy from the tree’s pale limbs. To Samwell Tarly’s eye half the tree’s branches seem dead, but elsewhere a few red leaves still rustle, and it is there that the ravens like to perch. The tree is full of ravens and there are more in the arched windows overhead and all around the yard.

Archmaester Walgrave’s chambers are located in the west tower of the Ravenry, below the white raven rookery.

Archmaester Marwyn’s chambers are in the north tower behind a door of oak and iron. They are accessible through the north tower’s ground level door and up a flight of steps. Marwyn’s room is large and round. There are books and scrolls everywhere, strewn across the tables and stacked up on the floor in piles four feet high. Faded tapestries and ragged maps cover the stone walls. There is a hearth. When Samwell Tarly is in the chambers the only light comes from a three feet tall a tall black candle in the centre of the room.

Quotes

The white ravens and the black ones quarrel like Dornishmen and Marchers, so they keep them apart.
