Jaehaerys II was King of the Seven Kingdoms and the sixteenth Targaryen to sit the Iron Throne. He was born the second son of King Aegon the Fifth and his Queen Betha Blackwood. Jaehaerys was the father of Aerys II and the grandfather of Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys. Dalbridge who would later join the Night's Watch served as a squire to Jaehaerys in his youth.[3]

Appearance

Jaehaerys was sickly looking, pale and frail with large purple eyes and shoulder length hair. He wore his grandfather Maekar's crown.[4] He suffered from numerous ailments throughout his life. [5]

History

Jaehaerys was an amiable, clever and sickly man who died at the young age of thirty-seven.[6] [7]

Jaehaerys father, King Aegon V had developed a deep distaste for the Targaryen practice of incestuous marriages and was determined to end the custom. Jaehaerys from a young age was of a more traditional frame of mind, as he was in love with his sister Princess Shaera who in turn, desired him. Their parents observed this, did everything to separate the two siblings, but this only served to inflame the pairs passion.

Jaehaerys father and mother in 237 AC while arranging a string of betrothals for their children, arranged a betrothal of Prince Jaehaerys to Celia Tully, the daughter of the Lord of Riverrun, Jaehaerys sister, Princess Shaera was to wed Luthor Tyrell the heir to Highgarden when they both came of age. [8][9]

When Jaehaerys older brother, Prince Duncan broke his betrothal and wed a common born girl known as Jenny of Oldstones, he was forced by the small council to choose between the Iron Throne or the girl, he choose love and abdicated his claim on the crown, thus Jaehaerys was made the new heir. Jaehaerys did not fail to take note, that his father despite his anger eventually gave in to his sons wish to follow his heart and marry for love. [8]

In 240 AC Prince Jaehaerys and Princess Shaera who both eluded their guardians, secretly wed and consummated the marriage. Aegon despaired over this, but felt he had no choice now and was forced to relent to his children's wishes, while at the same time dealing with the anger and wounded pride of both House Tully and House Tyrell who his children's actions had spurned. [8] In 244 AC Jaehaerys and Shaera had their first child, a son who they named Aerys.

Jaehaerys may have married for love, however, he commanded his son, Aerys, and daughter, Rhaella, to marry each other. A woods witch, brought to court by Jenny of Oldstones, prophesied that the prince that was promised would be born from their line. This marriage also further enraged Jaehaerys father, King Aegon V. [10]{{ref|twoiaf| Aegon Their firstborn child, Rhaegar, was born in the year 259 AC, on the same day that the Tragedy at Summerhall took place, killing King Aegon the fifth of his name.

Reign

Jaehaerys's ascended the throne at thirty-four, despite his young age, his reign would be short.

The most notable event that happened in his reign was the War of the Ninepenny Kings. The Band of Nine had seized the Stepstones, Jaehaerys feared they would use the islands as a base of operation to launch a war on the Seven Kingdoms. Despite being the least martial of Aegon V's sons, he proved capable of defending realm from the Blackfyre pretender Maelys the Monstrous.[3] Wanting to end the Blackfyre threat, once and for all. Jaehaerys assembled the armies of the Iron Throne.

Jaehaerys despite being sickly wanted to led the attack himself, but his Hand of the King, Lord Ormund Baratheon protested this move and led the attack personally, the navy of House Targaryen landed on three of the Stepstones Islands. At first the invasion looked like it would end in failure, with Lord Ormund the first to fall, he died in the arms of his son Steffon after being cut down by Maelys. Command passed to Gerold Hightower of the Kingsguard, the final battle was hard pressed but during the war, a young knight named Ser Barristan Selmy slew Maelys Blackfyre in single combat, winning undying fame and ending House Blackfyre through the male line. With Maelys dead, the rest of the Band of Nine lost interest in Westeros. [5]

Due to his delicate health, Jaehaerys was considered weak by many, but Ser Barristan Selmy, whom he raised to the Kingsguard,[11] thought differently. Jaehaerys's reign only lasted three years when he died of his illness, but he reigned well in those short years. He proved a capable king, restoring order to the kingdom, ending the Blackfyre threat and reconciling many of the Great Houses who had grown unhappy with his fathers reign. [5]

Quotes

King Jaehaerys once told me that madness and greatness were two sides of the same coin. Every time a new Targaryen is born, he said, the gods toss the coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see how it will land.[12]
