Poxy Jeyne Poore was a leader of the Poor Fellows during the Faith Militant uprising against King Maegor I Targaryen.[1]

It is unknown if there was a noble house name "House Poore" or if this was a personal sobriquet that Poxy Jeyne acquired.

History

Following the Faith Militant's defeats in 42 AC in the battles at Stonebridge and the Great Fork of the Blackwater, new leaders arose across the Seven Kingdoms in 43 AC. Among these were Ser Joffrey Doggett in the westerlands and Septon Moon in the riverlands. One of the Faith Militant's most savage captains, however, was Poxy Jeyne Poore - who rose to prominence because the lower order of Poor Fellows could contain both male and female members (unlike the Warrior's Sons, who were all knights). Poxy Jeyne Poore led the Poor Fellows in the Kingswood of the stormlands, making all the forested lands between King's Landing and Storm's End impassable for travelers.

The forested terrain made Jeyne's cell of the Faith Militant more difficult to fight than others, and they were also in closest proximity to King's Landing itself. Therefore when Maegor launched a new military campaign against the Faith Militant in 45 AC, he targeted Jeyne's Poor Fellows in the Kingswood. Scores of them were hunted down: any taken alive were hanged (if they refused to go to the Wall and take the black). Poxy Jeyne's ferocity and knowledge of the wooded terrain, however, led to a determined resistance against Maegor's army, and she continued to elude them throughout the year.

Ultimately, Jeyne was only captured when she was betrayed by three of her own followers in 46 AC, who received pardons and knighthoods as their rewards. Maegor had three septons who were traveling with him declare Jeyne to be a witch, and ordered her to be burned at the stake in a public execution by the Wendwater River. When the day of her execution came, her followers burst from the surrounding woods to rescue her: three hundred Poor Fellows, all of them peasants. They were led by none other than Ser Horys Hill, the bastard hedge knight who had led the Poor Fellows at the Great Fork and managed to escape the slaughter there. His reputation tarnished, few followers remained with him afterwards, and he eventually linked up with Jeyne's forces. Yet this was exactly as Maegor had planned: Jeyne's public execution was a trap to lure out her remaining followers, with Maegor's forces waiting and ready for them. The rescuers were surrounded and slaughtered, and Jeyne's execution continued.[1]

Behind the scenes

Poxy Jeyne Poore appears to be loosely inspired by Joan of Arc: a religiously motivated female warrior, who after being betrayed and captured was declared a witch in order to be burned at the stake.
