Kedge Whiteye is a ranger of the Night's Watch.

Character and Appearance

Kedge is a forty-odd year old ranger who has been at the Wall since he was ten years old. His left eye is blind, his right eye mean. Beyond the Wall he is as a good as any ranger alone with an axe and garron, but he has never gotten along well with other men.[1]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Kedge is part of Thoren Smallwood's scouting expedition in the Frostfangs during the great ranging. When they return to the encampment of the Night's Watch on the Fist of the First Men, tells assorted members of the Night's Watch of the march of Mance Rayder's host.[2] He survives the fight at the Fist. After reaching Craster's Keep, Kedge chops off Bannen's mangled foot in an attempt to save the injured scout, but Bannen eventually dies.[3]

Kedge stays loyal to the Watch during the mutiny at Craster's Keep and is one of the few survivors of the ranging to make it back to Castle Black.[4]

A Feast for Crows

Kedge is one of the rangers sent to escort Samwell Tarly, Maester Aemon, and Gilly to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. He is angry when Samwell shows up on his own, as it means he lost a bet that Samwell would have to be dragged from his bed by the rangers.[5]

A Dance with Dragons

Kedge guards the Wall when Lord Commander Jon Snow makes his inspection. Kedge and Dywen report that two of the queen's men, Ser Richard Horpe and Ser Justin Massey, rode south along the kingsroad.[1]

Jon appoints Kedge as the leader of one of three groups of three rangers sent ranging.[6] Melisandre warns Jon soon after their departure that in her visions she has seen three of the nine rangers return eyeless, weeping blood.[6]

When the decapitated heads of the group led by Black Jack Bulwer turn up north of Castle Black, Jon asks Melisandre if she has also seen the surviving six rangers, including Kedge, in her visions. Melisandre reveals she has not seen their fates just yet.[7]
