The ten thousand sellsword company known as the Golden Company lands in the Stormlands, there intent to place Aegon Targaryen upon the Iron Throne and make him Aegon the sixth of his name. The company is well disciplined and have already taken four castles, among them are Griffin's Roost and Greenstone.

The timing for the invasion was ideal as the Iron Throne was massively indebted thanks to Robert's spending (which was further made worse by Cersei Lannister's foolish refusal to pay back the Iron Bank of Braavos). Thus the Iron Throne was unable to afford sellswords or try and buy the Golden Company off. The Iron Throne was also preoccupied with Ironmen in the west, and Stannis in the North, Also, nearly all the Great Houses but the Vale and Dorne had suffered significant losses in the War of the Five Kings. Jon Connington hopes to win Dorne to the cause. The company is planning on next taking Storm's End and raise the standard of House Targaryen upon its battlements.
