Books

The last dragon belonging to House Targaryen died young in 153 AC, during the reign of King Aegon III, who was called the Dragonbane.[1][3][4][5] Her death marked the extinction of dragons in Westeros and beyond, until Daenerys Targaryen managed to hatch three dragons around a century and a half later.[6]

Appearance

The last dragon had been a green female, who lived in King's Landing. She was sickly, small, misshapen, and stunted, with withered wings.[5] Her name is not known.

History

The last dragon was born to House Targaryen during the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen.[1] Although she was sickly, she laid a clutch of five eggs,[7] which never hatched.[5] Ser Arlan of Pennytree had seen the last dragon in King's Landing, the year before she died,[5] as well as her dragon eggs, which he described as "hard as stone, but beautiful".[7]

The last dragon died in 153 AC, during the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen.[1][8] It was rumored that the King had poisoned her, as he had been afraid of dragons since he had seen his uncle's dragon devour his mother.[5]

House Targaryen kept nineteen dragon skulls in the throne room during the Targaryen Dynasty. Two of these skulls were no bigger than a mastiff's skull, and oddly misshapen, and both had been born on Dragonstone.[9] Due to the description of the skulls, one of them might have been the skull of the last Targaryen dragon.

It is thought by some that magic had begun to leave the world the day the last dragon died.[10]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

In 299 AC, in King's Landing, Tyrion Lannister meets with Wisdom Hallyne the pyromancer, who tells him that the alchemists' production of wildfire is ahead of schedule. Hallyne says that their spells are more effective than usual, and wonders if there are any dragons around, as Wisdom Pollitor had once told him that magic had begun to go out of the world the day the last dragon died.[10]

A Feast for Crows

In 300 AC, in Oldtown, the Citadel novices and acolytes Mollander, Alleras, Roone, Armen, and Leo Tyrell debate the rumors that Daenerys Targaryen has hatched three dragons. Armen says the last dragon died in the reign of Aegon III, and insists that the last Targaryen dragon was the last dragon in the world.[4]
