Leo Tyrell, known as Leo Longthorn, was the Lord of Highgarden and head of House Tyrell during the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen.[2]

Appearance and Character

In 209 AC, Leo was a slender man with silver in his hair and a grey beard. He wore green and gold, and his shield was decorated with the golden rose of House Tyrell.[2] He rode a white charger with green satin trappings patterned with golden roses.[2]

Leo Longthorn was well respected and liked.[2] Nearly a hundred years later, he is regarded as one of the greatest knights ever produced from House Tyrell, and some consider him the finest jouster ever to couch a lance.[3][4]

History

First Blackfyre Rebellion

Lord Leo participated in the First Blackfyre Rebellion, fighting on behalf of House Targaryen. He won notable victories in the Reach against Daemon I Blackfyre's supporters, though his forces were unable to gather quickly enough to arrive in time for the Battle of the Redgrass Field in 196 AC.[4]

Tourney at Ashford Meadow

Lord Leo participated in the tourney at Ashford Meadow in 209 AC, beginning the tourney as one of the champions. In the first tilt, he was challenged by Lord Damon Lannister, who yielded on the third lance after having his helm knocked off. Leo was next challenged by Lord Pearse Caron, who was defeated after his longaxe caught in Leo's shield after a fight afoot. One-eyed Ser Robyn Rhysling lost his helm to Leo's lance in their first course, yet refused to yield. Three times more, they rode at each other, but Leo was too chivalrous to aim another lance at Robyn's unprotected head. Finally, the Lord of Highgarden struck Robyn's breastplate a solid thump right over the heart and sent him cartwheeling to the earth.[2]

Prince Baelor Targaryen, Prince Maekar Targaryen, Lord Ashford, and Lord Leo judged Ser Duncan the Tall for having attacked Prince Aerion Targaryen; a trial of seven followed.[2]

Later Life

During the wedding tourney at Whitewalls in 212 AC, Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Prince Aegon Targaryen, drank a toast to the health of Leo, as there were rumors that he was ailing.[5]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

According to Prince Oberyn Martell, Lord Mace Tyrell wants one of his sons to be another Leo Longthorn. Willas Tyrell was encouraged to join the lists at too young an age, however, and was crippled during a joust with Oberyn. The Dornish prince is skeptical of the claim that Willas's youngest brother, Ser Loras Tyrell, is a better jouster than Leo had been.[3]
