Lyman was a cunning lord.
Lord Lyman protected Prince Aegon and Princess Rhaena Targaryen, extending guest right and refusing King Maegor I Targaryen's demands to turn them over. However, Lyman did not pledge his swords to the fugitive prince and princess, nor did he stir himself from Casterly Rock after Aegon perished at his uncle's hands during the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye in 43 AC. When Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen put forward his claim to the Iron Throne, Lyman rallied to his support.
When King Maegor I Targaryen marry Jeyne Westerling in 47 AC, he confirmed her son by her previous marriage with Lord Alyn Tarbeck as Lord of Tarbeck Hall. The boy was sent to Casterly Rock to be fostered by Lord Lyman.
Lord Lyman and his wife, Lady Jocasta, went to Faircastle in 49 AC to assist at the wedding of Queen Rhaena Targaryen and Androw Farman, the youngest son of his vassal Lord Marq Farman. Later that year, Lyman traveled to King's Landing along with three hundred knights from Casterly Rock to the wedding of Rhaena's mother to Lord Rogar Baratheon.
The following year, after the death of Lord Marq Farman, Lyman hosted Rhaena and her retenue for more than a month. Lyman's generous hospitality wasn't without purpose: he wanted an alliance with the Iron Throne by wedding either his bastard son, Tyler Hill, or one of his trueborn sons to Rhaena, and he wanted a dragon of his own. When Rhena discovered Lyman's intentions she left Casterly Rock.
Though Lyman was never part of King Jaehaerys I's small council, he was twice suggested as master of coin by his advisors. The first time in 50 AC after the king had dismissed Lord Edwell Celtigar and the second time in 59 AC after the murder of Rego Draz. Lyman died from the Shivers not long after the second suggestion.
