Lynesse Hightower is the youngest daughter of Lord Leyton Hightower.[2] She was the second wife of Ser Jorah Mormont and is now the chief concubine of Tregar Ormollen in Lys.

Appearance

Lynesse is very beautiful. She has golden hair, skin the color of cream, and soft hands.[3] She looks similar to Daenerys Targaryen.

History

At the Tourney at Lannisport Lynesse met her future husband, Ser Jorah Mormont. He crowned her the Queen of Love and Beauty after winning the tourney and asked for her hand in marriage. They married shortly thereafter in Lannisport. Although they had married for love, the marriage did not remain happy for long. Having grown up in a prosperous household in the mild, fertile and densely populated Reach, Lynesse was completely unprepared for the harsh and spartan nature of life in the North, and quickly became miserable. Jorah attempted to reproduce the luxurious lifestyle his wife was accustomed to by lavishing her with expensive gifts, but quickly drove himself into financial ruin. In desperation, he began looking to less savory ways of paying off his debts, attempting to raise money by selling some convicted poachers to a Tyroshi slaver.[2]

Learning that one of his bannermen had engaged in the slave trade, Lord Eddard Stark declared Jorah's life forfeit. Jorah and Lynesse escaped to Lys, but with the relationship already severely strained by their exile and Jorah still unable to afford the lifestyle his wife desired, she finally left him. Lynesse moved into the manse of a merchant prince, Tregar Ormollen, and is now his chief concubine; even his wife goes in fear of her.[2]

While talking with Samwell Tarly, the captain of the Huntress refers to Lynesse as Humfrey Hightower’s “whore of a sister”.[4]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

While in Vaes Tolorro Ser Jorah Mormont tells Daenerys Targaryen for the first time of his second wife, Lynesse Hightower, and his ill-fated marriage to her.[2]

A Storm of Swords

While traveling in the rain to the Twins, Lady Maege Mormont speaks of Lynesse to Catelyn Stark. She recalls that her nephew Jorah had brought home a proper lady he had won in a tourney. Dacey Mormont adds that she had hair like spun gold and skin like cream, but her soft hands were never made for axes.[3]

Catelyn recalls Lynesse. She remembers how Jorah Mormont had brought Lynesse to Winterfell for feasts, and once they had guested for a fortnight. She remembers how young Lynesse had been, how fair and how unhappy, and how, one night, after several cups of wine, Lynesse had confessed to Catelyn that the North was no place for a Hightower of Oldtown.[3]

A Feast for Crows

When Ser Humfrey Hightower sails to Lys to hire sellsails to help fight off the ironborn attack on the Reach, it is a commonly held hope that Lynesse will help him get the best possible fleet.[4]

A Dance with Dragons

Jorah explains to Tyrion that when Eddard Stark drove him to exile, he fled to Lys with Lynesse, opting for Lys over Braavos because Lynesse wanted to live someplace warm. Lynesse stayed in Lys while Jorah fought as a sellsword on the Rhoyne, but he was unable to earn enough money for her lavish lifestyle. By the time Jorah returned to Lys, Lynesse had taken a new lover, Tregar Ormollen, who told Jorah that he would be enslaved for debt unless he gave Lynesse up and left the city.[5]

Quotes about Lynesse

The first time I beheld her, I thought she was a goddess come to earth, the Maid herself made flesh.[2]

Jorah Mormont

Daenerys: Tell me the name of your ghost, Jorah. You know all of mine.
Jorah: Her name was Lynesse.[2]
