Lord Mace Tyrell is Lord of Highgarden, Defender of the Marches, High Marshal of the Reach, and Warden of the South.

Character and Appearance

He is handsome and a once powerful looking man, but has since turned to fat.[2] He has curly brown hair and cuts his beard into a triangular shape that has white spots within it.[3]

He is a prematurely old and tedious man lacking in political savvy. His sole military accomplishment was the Siege of Storm's End. Though he has tried to use the Battle of Ashford as evidence of strategic brilliance, he actually had little to do with the fighting as the battle was won by his vanguard, led by Randyll Tarly, before his main force entered the field. He serves as the figurehead of his powerful house for his more intelligent family members.

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Mace has always dreamed of his daughter being a Queen. He supported Renly Baratheon and Loras Tyrell when they presented a plan to crown Renly and have him wed Margaery Tyrell, becoming Hand of the King to Renly I. However, King Renly was slain at Storm's End before consummating the marriage. Mace responded by moving his army to Bitterbridge to plan his next move with his sons. They were joined by Petyr Baelish, who offered an alliance from King Joffrey Baratheon and House Lannister. He joined Tywin's army to march on and defeat Stannis at the Battle of the Blackwater; there he commanded the host's left.[4] His reward was a seat on the small council as Master of Ships.[5]

A Storm of Swords

After the Battle of the Blackwater, the victorious great lords met to divide the spoils, of which Mace was granted the lands of House Florent.[6]

Mace served as one of the three judges at the trial of Tyrion Lannister for the murder of Joffrey. He wanted Tyrion dead because his daughter was drinking from the cup that contained the poison that killed Joffrey. Unbeknownst to Mace it was his mother Olenna Tyrell who poisoned Joffrey.

A Feast for Crows

He was charged by Queen Regent Cersei Lannister with the capture of Storm's End in order to remove him from King's Landing. With Mace gone Cersei plotted against Margaery. Reciprocal accusations of immorality led to the imprisonment of both Margaery and Cersei by the Faith of the Seven. When Mace received news of this he abandoned the siege and marched his army back to King's Landing.

A Dance with Dragons

Mace arrived at King's Landing to find Margaery and her cousins already released. Given the weak evidence against them they were turned over to the custody of his bannerman Randyll Tarly, whose army reached the city first. Their release was conditional on Tarly's holy oath to return them for trial. Cersei Lannister was stripped of the regency; Kevan Lannister arrived in the city and was made Regent to King Tommen.

To placate House Tyrell following Cersei's accusations, Kevan made multiple concessions to Mace. He named Mace the Hand of the King, a title Mace had desired since Tywin's death. Kevan appointed two of Mace's bannermen to the King's council. Despite numerous threats facing the Iron Throne, Mace refused to march his army from the city before his daughter was acquitted. Kevan grew increasingly resentful of Mace's apparent insatiability. Mace added a hundred men of the reach to the city watch and planned a new tower of the hand double the size of its predecessor.

Kevan was killed by Varys leaving the role of Regent to King Tommen vacant.
