Ser Malentine Velaryon was a knight from House Velaryon. He was a nephew of Lord Corlys Velaryon by his youngest brother. He had four brothers, including Ser Rhogar, and several cousins.[1]
History
During the reign of King Viserys I, Malentine's cousin Ser Vaemond Velaryon had put himself forward as the true heir to Driftmark, on the grounds that Lord Corlys' chosen successor, his grandson Lucerys, was a bastard. Their cousin lost his head at the behest of Lucerys' mother, Princess Rhaenyra, who had Prince Daemon seize him, behead him and feed his carcass to her dragon. Yet when Ser Malentine and his siblings took their case before the sick and failing Viserys, they made the grievous mistake of questioning the legitimacy of his daughter Rhaenyra’s children. Viserys had their tongues removed for this insolence, though he let them keep their heads.[2][3] Malentine and his four brothers were thereafter known as the "silent five".[1]
When Lord Corlys died in 132 AC, he was succeeded as Lord of the Tides by his bastard grandson, Alyn of Hull. This succession was not uncontested. Malentine and his only surviving brother, Ser Rhogar, yet again took their own claim to the small council in King’s Landing. When the Hand of the King and the regents ruled against them, Malentine and Rhogar refused to accept the decision. As Mushroom put it in his testimony, "lacking tongues with which to make their appeal, they preferred to argue with swords". The plot of the silent brothers to assassinate Alyn failed when the guards at Castle Driftmark proved loyal to the Sea Snake's memory and his chosen heir. Ser Malentine was slain during the attempt, his brother Rhogar captured and later sent to the Night's Watch.[1]
