Merrett Frey was a member of House Frey and a POV character in the epilogue of A Storm of Swords. He is 37 years old at the time of his death. Merrett was the ninth son of Lord Walder Frey.[1] He was the fourth son born of Lord Walder's marriage to Amarei Crakehall.

Appearance

Merrett was a big, broad man. In his youth he had been almost as robust as his older brother Hosteen Frey, the strongest son of Lord Walder, but in later years he became "soft and fleshy."[1]

History

Merrett served with his mother's relative Lord Sumner Crakehall as a page and later a squire. Like many Crakehall descendants, he was known for his strength and robustness. During this time he knew Jaime Lannister, although the two were not very close because of Merrett's habits of bullying others, which was not to Jaime's liking. Jaime is implied to have turned the tables on Merrett when the Frey tried to bully him.[2]

The downfall in his life began with the expedition against the Kingswood Brotherhood. First he spread a pox throughout the camp and later he was captured by Wenda the White Fawn, and was branded on his arse with her mark, the fawn.[2] During his release, he was hit with a mace that left him insensible for a week. As a result, he suffered immense pain whenever he was hit in the head, and generally suffered extreme headaches for which he drank excessively to numb the pain. He was never knighted because of his injuries. Due to his injuries, he is mocked as Merrett Muttonhead by his father.[1]

Merrett married Mariya of House Darry around 282 AL, with whom he had four children.[3]. He was the father of Little Walder Frey. Two of his daughters shamed their parents, with promiscuity (Gatehouse Ami) and gluttony (Fat Walda). Consigned to a useless existence without knighthood, and considering his wife a shrew and his children worthless, Merrett gained the dubious distinction of being the biggest drunk in the Twins.

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Merrett is among the many Freys present at the Twins when Catelyn Tully comes to treat with Lord Walder Frey.

A Storm of Swords

During the Red Wedding, Merrett was told to get Greatjon Umber too drunk to fight during Robb's murder. He failed, however, passing out in the attempt while the Greatjon was sober enough to kill two men, break another's arm, and take part of Ser Leslyn Haigh's ear off before being subdued.[1]

With the Freys allied with House Bolton, Lord Walder offered Roose Bolton the choice of a daughter or granddaughter with her weight in silver as dowry. Bolton chose Fat Walda.[4][5][1]

After the Red Wedding, the Brotherhood Without Banners kidnapped Petyr Frey. Merrett volunteered to deliver the ransom. He hoped to gain favor from Petyr, who stood high in the line of succession for the lordship of the Twins. He found that the Brotherhood had already hanged Petyr for his involvement in the Red Wedding. They took the ransom and prepared to hang Merrett as well. When Merrett protested his innocence to the Red Wedding, the Brotherhood told him they had a witness. This turned out to be Catelyn Tully, who was not dead after all. Catelyn recognized Merrett and had him hanged.[1]
