Morning was a dragon which hatched late in The Dance of the Dragons. It belonged to Rhaena of Pentos, daughter of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon.

About

Morning was apparently so-named because it hatched after Rhaenyra died and most of the other dragons had already been killed during the Dance. Just as morning gives hope after the darkness of night, Morning gave a boost of morale to Rhaenyra's remaining supporters. Even so, the war ended only a few months after it hatched, so it was nowhere near big enough to ride, much less be useful in the war.

Morning was hatched from an egg laid by Syrax (thus making Morning the first dragon within the narrative for which any parent has been identified).

History

Syrax laid "another" clutch of eggs just before the Dance of the Dragons, one of which was given to Rhaena Targaryen (called "Rhaena of Pentos" for the city of her birth). Rhaena's sister Baela Targaryen had a fine young dragon named Moondancer. Rhaena had previously been given another dragon egg, but when it hatched the dragon inside was a sickly broken thing who died within hours. After receiving the new dragon egg from Syrax, Rhaena slept with it every night, praying for a dragon to match her sister's.

As the Dance began, after Lucerys Velaryon died along with his dragon Arrax fighting Aemond Targaryen riding the great Vhagar, the blacks geared up for a full scale war. For safety, Luke's older brother Jacaerys Velaryon decided to send Rhaena to their ally House Arryn at the Eyrie. She was flown there by Jacaerys's youngest brother, her cousin Joffrey Velaryon, on his dragon Tyraxes. With her she took three dragon eggs (her own and two others).

Morning hatched late in the war, giving hope to the blacks after Rhaenyra and most of the other dragons had died, though it was too young to affect the war before it ended.

Morning was only the fourth living dragon left by the time it hatched. Sheepstealer had disappeared along with its rider Nettles, The Cannibal had also mysteriously disappeared from Dragonstone, and Silverwing went wild with grief after Vermithor was killed at the Second Battle of Tumbleton, after which she fled west and made her lair on an island in Red Lake, hunting and killing as she would. Morning was therefore the only dragon that anyone could be said to "control" at the time it was hatched.

It is unknown if Morning was the last dragon that ever lived. The last dragon is said to have died in 153 AC, only 22 years after the Dance ended, meaning that Morning could not have lived more than 22 years.
