- This is about a type of tournament contestant. For the novella, see The Mystery Knight.
A mystery knight is a contestant at a tournament that competes without revealing his identity. The contestant may or may not reveal his identity later. Mystery knights choose to conceal their names for a variety of reasons.
Description
When Meera Reed tells Bran Stark of the Knight of the Laughing Tree, who competed in the Tourney at Harrenhal, Bran recalls from his education: "Mystery knights would oft appear at tourneys, with helms concealing their faces, and shields that were either blank or bore some strange device."[1]
Examples
Besides the Knight of the Laughing Tree, other mystery knights include:
- Prince Aemon Targaryen, who competed as the "Knight of Tears" so he could name his sister Naerys the tournament's Queen of Love and Beauty.[1]
- Ser Barristan Selmy, who competed as a mystery knight at the age of 10 in a tournament at Blackhaven,[1] and was knighted for again doing so at the age of 16 in the winter tournament at King's Landing.[2]
- The outlaw Simon Toyne, who competed at a tournament at Storm's End.[3]
- The Bastard of Uplands, who competed at a tournament at Oldtown as "Blackshield" and was defeated and exposed by Selmy.[2]
- Ser Duncan the Tall, who competed as "the Gallows Knight" at a joust to celebrate the wedding of Lord Ambrose Butterwell.[4]
- Jonquil Darke, who competed at the War for the White Cloaks as the "Serpent in Scarlet".[5]
- Prince Baelon Targaryen competed at the tourney at Old Oak as the "Silver Fool".[6]
