Book A Feast for Crows

Pate is an 18 year old novice of the Citadel. He is the POV Character of the Prologue of A Feast for Crows.[1] Pate is not very intelligent; he has been at the Citadel for five years but has not earned a single link for his maesters necklace. Part of his duties is looking after old senile Archmaester Walgrave.

A Feast for Crows

He has met a person who calls himself the Alchemist. The Alchemist has promised him a golden dragon if Pate brings him the personal key of Walgrave in three days. The personal key of an Archmaester can open any lock in the Citadel. Pate thinks about this offer for two days. He needs the gold to claim the maidenhood of Rosey, the youngest serving girl of the Quill and Tankard pub. Pate dreams of running away with Rosey[2].

On the third day he is with his friends, Alleras, Mollander, Armen and Roone in the Quill and Tankard celebrating Alleras' newly acquired link. They meet Leo Tyrell, another novice who thinks very much of himself and is not liked by the others. Leo mocks them and claims he will have Rosey. Shortly after the other boys go back to the Citadel leaving Leo and Pate, who is waiting for the Alchemist.[3]

Eventually Pate thinks that the Alchemist will not show up and heads back to the Citadel. Outside the pub he runs into the Alchemist who tells Pate to follow him. Pate and the Alchemist walk to a narrow alley. Pate asks that the Alchemist show his face, which he does. The Alchemist is a young man. He has a slight scar on his right cheek, a hooked nose. His hair tick, black and curly. This is exact the same appearance that Jaqen H'ghar takes after he leaves Arya Stark.[4] Pate gives the Alchemist the key, thus proving himself to be a thief and the Alchemist gives him the dragon. When Pate tries to walk back he falls to the ground and dies. His last thoughts are of Rosey.[5]

Later, Samwell Tarly comes to the Citadel and meets Alleras, Leo Tyrell and a boy calling himself Pate. Apparently the others don't know that Pate has died and that someone has taken his place.[6]

Name

Pate was named after Spotted Pate, the pig boy a folk hero.[7]
