Pate the Woodcock
|Born||In 13 BC – 33 AC|
Ser Pate the Woodcock was a knight of the Kingsguard during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.
By 49 AC the young king Jaehaerys I still had five vacant spots in the Kingsguard to fill. At the wedding of his mother Alyssa Velaryon and Lord Rogar Baratheon, it was decided to fill the remaining five slots by a test of arms since knights from all over the realm had come to attend the wedding. Jaehaerys agreed, but with a twist - the knights must fight on foot, not the joust, for foes seldom strike a king from horseback.
The wild melees and bloody duels that followed were dubbed by maesters as the War for the White Cloaks with hundreds of knights competing for the honor of serving in the Kingsguard. Ser Pate the Woodcock was one of the five champions. He was the youngest of all the champions and his weapon of choice was a spear instead of a sword. Some questioned whether he truly was a knight, but such was his skill that Ser Joffrey Doggett personally knighted the lad himself to end the accusation while hundreds of onlookers cheered, after which Pate was given the white cloak of the Kingsguard.
During King Jaehaerys' training at Dragonstone, Ser Pate was the one who won the castle garrison's wagers on who would "kill" (defeat) the young king the most. In the book allegedly written by Lady Coryanne Wylde, A Caution for Young Girls, the author claimed to have bedded both Ser Pate and his sworn brother Ser Joffrey Doggett, although most maesters dismiss these claims.
After Jaehaerys reached maturity and sat on the Iron Throne in King's Landing, the king summoned Lord Rogar Baratheon and granted him a full pardon, on the condition that he be a faithful husband to Jaehaerys's mother, Alyssa Velaryon, to which Lord Rogar agreed. Ser Pate led the escort of a hundred men-at-arms to take Lord Rogar and Queen Alyssa safely to Storm's End.
