Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Ser Preston is one of the Kingsguard who accompanies King Robert I Baratheon on his kingswood boar-hunting trip, during which Robert is gored.[5] Ser Preston is later present in the throne room when Ser Barristan Selmy is dismissed, and laughs at his former sworn brother's shame.[6]

A Clash of Kings

Ser Preston beats Sansa Stark when ordered to by King Joffrey I Baratheon. According to Sansa, he treats her as a lackwit child during the beatings.[7]

When Joffrey practices shooting at hares in the Red Keep, one of his bolts almost hits Ser Preston in the groin.[8]

Ser Preston guards the Iron Throne when Tyrion Lannister sends Ser Cleos Frey back to Robb Stark, the King in the North, with his terms for peace. When Ser Alliser Thorne, angry about how he has been treated by him, tries to grab Tyrion's sleeve after the reception, he is rebuffed by Preston: "No closer, ser". Alliser relents, knowing that it is unwise to challenge a knight of the Kingsguard.[9]

Ser Preston is part of the procession to see Princess Myrcella off to Dorne. When the mob goes mad in the streets of King's Landing, Preston tries to cut his way back to aid the High Septon against the mob and is killed by the maddened people. It takes the gold cloaks a few days to find his body, as they search for a knight in white armor. However, the rioters have so severely stabbed and hacked at Preston's corpse that he is "red-brown from head to heel" and barely identifiable.[1] He is replaced in the Kingsguard by Ser Balon Swann.[10]

A Storm of Swords

Tyrion Lannister receives some hostile reactions among the smallfolk of King's Landing when he is inspecting the devastation left beyond the King's Gate after the Battle of the Blackwater. He assumes that, if he was not protected by Ser Bronn, the people would pull him off his horse and smash his face in with a cobblestone, as they did for Ser Preston.[11]

When Ser Jaime Lannister assumes his duties as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, he notices that in his absence the White Book has not been updated, as that is the Lord Commander's duty, and that the death of Ser Preston has yet to be recorded.[12]

Lord Petyr Baelish tells Sansa Stark that when he was arranging the contract for a marriage between King Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell in Highgarden he let his men spread information about the gruesome details of Ser Preston's death. Littlefinger suggests that by doing so, he successfully planted the idea in Lord Mace Tyrell's mind that his son Ser Loras should join the Kingsguard in order to be able to protect his sister.[13]

A Feast for Crows

Princess Arianne Martell asks the guilt-ridden Ser Arys Oakheart during one of their dates whether he believes that he is the only member of the Kingsguard who ever loved a woman. Arys shares that he knew, among other things, that Preston used to visit a draper's wife when the husband was away.[4]
