Dorne and the location of the Prince's Pass

The Prince's Pass, historically called the Wide Way, is one of the principal overland routes from the Reach and the stormlands to Dorne. It is located in the Dornish Red Mountains.

Geography

Its Dornish side is guarded from the castle Skyreach, the seat of House Fowler, which holds the title Warden of the Prince's Pass.[1] The Prince's Pass descends from the mountains into the deep sands of Dorne.[2] Structures along the route include Skyreach, Kingsgrave, and the Tower of Joy. North of the Prince's Pass is Nightsong in the Dornish Marches. The Prince's Pass is not as steep nor as treacherous as the Boneway.[3]

History

The Prince's Pass was originally the Wide Way, the shortest and easiest route between the Reach and Dorne. It was guarded fby the Lords of the Wide Way, the Kings of Stone and Sky from House Fowler, who carved Skyreach into its stony slopes.[3] The Fowlers submitted to House Martell during Nymeria's War,[4] however, and the route became known as the Prince's Pass, as the Martells used the title of "prince" in the Rhoynish custom.

Alester and Ser Olyvar Oakheart died in the Prince's Pass at the side of the Young Dragon, Daeron I Targaryen.[5]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Tyrion Lannister requests Doran Martell send his armies to the Prince's Pass to keep the marcher lords in their castles as part of the political betrothal of Myrcella Baratheon and Trystane Martell.[6] Prince Doran Martell promises to move his banners into the high passes once Myrcella arrives safely at Sunspear.[7] Word eventually reaches Stannis Baratheon that the Dornish have fortified the mountain passes, poised to sweep down onto the Marches while he besieges Storm's End.[8]

The Winds of Winter

Two Dornish hosts have massed in the Boneway and the Prince's Pass. The hosts sit encamped, waiting for Prince Doran Martell to loose them on the enemies of House Martell.[9]
