Rhaegal is one of the dragons born on the Dothraki Sea, along with Drogon and Viserion. Commanded by Daenerys Targaryen, he was named for her brother, Rhaegar Targaryen.[1] He has green and bronze scales.[2] His scales are dark green, the green of moss in the deep woods at dusk, just before the light fades and they gleam like jade. His eyes are a bronze, brighter than polished shields and they glow with their own heat. His flame is orange-and-yellow fire shot through with veins of green.

Rhaegal's egg was a deep green, with burnished bronze flecks that came and went depending on how Dany turned it. Mirri Maz Duur proclaimed that in order to bring new life one had to give life. Daenerys burned Drogo's body, along with the maegi Mirri Maz Duur herself and the three eggs to give birth to Rhaegal, along with his brothers, Viserion and Drogon.[3]

A Dance with Dragons

Rhaegal and the other dragons were misbehaving. Rhaegal snapped at Irri.[8]. His head is now larger than a horse's.[9]

When Drogon allegedly kills a young girl outside Meereen, Daenerys has Viserion and Rhaegal chained in a "dragon pit" beneath the city.[10]

Rhaegal mortally burns Quentyn Martell with dragonfire in the dragon pits of Meereen when Martell tries to tame the dragons. [9] Once loosed from the pit Rhaegal makes his new lair in the great black pyramid of Yherizan where he hulks in the gloom like a fat woman bedecked with glowing orange jewels. The Pyramid is now a smoldering ruin and its former occupants are either dead or in flight.

Ser Barristan Selmy notes that thus far Rhaegal has shown himself to be more dangerous than Viserion.[11]
