Rhaegar, along with Jared Frey and Symond Frey, went to White Harbour to return the bones of Wendel Manderly (who was murdered at the Red Wedding) to his father Wyman Manderly. They also went to ensure White Harbour bends the knee to the Iron Throne. He came to be betrothed to Lord Wyman's granddaughter Wynafryd. They also offered Wyman Manderly a Frey bride and a betrothal of Little Walder Frey to Wyman's other granddaughter Wylla Manderly.
When Davos Seaworth arrives in White Harbour to try and persuade House Manderly to support Stannis Baratheon, all three of the Freys are present. Rhaegar insults both Davos and the memory of Robb Stark, calling him a "vile dog who needed to be put down".[4] Wyman Manderly was greatly angered by this but pretended to agree with Rhaegar, as the Iron throne held his son and heir hostage. Wyman pretended to order Davos' death and had a criminal with similar features executed and his head dipped in tar so the Freys falsely believed Davos dead. As a reward for proving his loyalty, the Iron throne returned Wyman's heir Wylis Manderly to him.
According to Wyman Manderly, Rhaegar, Jared and Symond were given palfreys as "guest gifts" when the three Freys departed White Harbour. (Guest gifts are usually given when a guest leaves making them no longer under the protection of Guest right.) Wyman claimed they were all to meet at Winterfell for the wedding of "Arya Stark" to Ramsay Bolton. They were not seen since, although Aenys Frey and Hosteen Frey, who were present at Winterfell, suspect Wyman Manderly of foul play.
Wyman Manderly also presented three huge Pies at the wedding feast while requesting a song from the singer Abel about the Rat Cook. This implied to readers that the three Freys were actually present at the wedding after all.
