Ser Rhogar Velaryon was a nephew of Lord Corlys Velaryon by his youngest brother. He had several brothers, including Ser Malentine, and several cousins.[1]
History
During the reign of King Viserys I, Rhogar's cousin Ser Vaemond Velaryon had put himself forward as the true heir to Driftmark, on the grounds that Lord Corlys' chosen successor, his grandson Lucerys, was a bastard. Their cousin lost his head at the behest of Lucerys' mother, Princess Rhaenyra, who had Prince Daemon seize him, behead him and feed his carcass to her dragon. Yet when Ser Malentine and his siblings, took their case before the sick and failing Viserys, they made the grievous mistake of questioning the legitimacy of his daughter Rhaenyra’s children. Viserys had their tongues removed for this insolence, though he let them keep their heads.
The succession of the baseborn Alyn of Hull as Lord of the Tides, was not uncontested. Several Velaryon cousins of Alyn of Hull, amongst them Ser Rhogar and his brother, yet again took their own claim to the council in King’s Landing. When the Hand and the regents ruled against them, Ser Vaemond's sons, Daemion and Daeron Velaryon choose to accept this decision.
Their silent cousins chose a different course. “Lacking tongues with which to make their appeal, they preferred to argue with swords,” says Mushroom. However, the plot to murder their young lord went awry when the guards at Castle Driftmark proved loyal to the Sea Snake's memory and his chosen heir. Ser Rhogar was captured during the attempt, his brother slain. Condemned to death, Ser Rhogar saved his head by taking the black.[1]
