Ser Samgood of Sour Hill, known as Sour Sam, was a knight of the Kingsguard during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. Prior to this, he was a hedge knight and boasted to be a veteran of hundreds of battles.

Appearance

By 49 AC Samgood was a grizzled man of sixty-three. He was one-eyed, bald and nearly toothless with a gaunt frame.[1]

History

By 49 AC the young king Jaehaerys still had five vacant spots in the Kingsguard to fill. At the wedding of his mother Alyssa Velaryon and Lord Rogar Baratheon, it was decided to fill the remaining five slots by a test of arms since knights from all over the realms had come to attend the wedding. Jaehaerys agreed, but with a twist - the knights must fight on foot, not the joust, for foes seldom strike a king from horseback.[1]

The wild melees and bloody duels that followed were dubbed by maesters as the War for the White Cloaks with hundreds of knights competing for the honor of serving in the Kingsguard. While Ser Samgood of Sour Hill was the eldest of the five champions to win and be given a white cloak, his skills had been honed from a lifetime of battles and he was quicker than men half his age.[1]

During Jaehaerys's minority on Dragonstone, Samgood and his sworn brothers sparred with their young king, who spent every morning until midday in the castle yard training with sword, shield and any other weapon. [2] Samgood accompanied young Prince Baelon when the lad visited the Dragonpit and stated that the Prince was either brave or mad after he saw the child smack Balerion the Black Dread on the snout. Prince Baelon was known as Baelon the Brave after this. [3]

In 59 AC when the winter disease known as the Shivers came to King's Landing, Samgood and his sworn brother Ser Victor the Valiant were among those carried off by the disease. Samgood was seventy-three years old.[4]
