By 49 AC Samgood was a grizzled man of sixty three, he was one eyed, bald and nearly toothless with a gaunt frame.
History
In 49 AC the young King Jaehaerys still had five vacant spots in the Kingsguard to fill. At the Wedding of his Mother and Lord Rogar Baratheon, it whas decided to fill the remaining five slots by a test of arms since knights from all over the realm had come to attend the wedding, Jaehaerys agreed, but with a twist, the Knights must fight on foot not the joust, for foes seldom strike a King via horseback. [1]
The wild Melee's and bloody duels that followed were dubbed by Maesters as the War for the White Cloaks with hundreds of knights competing for the honour of serving in the Kingsguard. Ser Samgood of Sour Hill was the eldest of the five champions to win, nonetheless his skills were honed from a lifetime of battles and he was quicker than men half his age. [1]
