Sansa Stark is the elder daughter of Catelyn and Eddard Stark. She possesses the traditional feminine graces of her milieu and is a strong believer in the world of chivalry portrayed in stories and songs. She is beautiful and excels at many female leisure activities, including singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, sewing, fashion, and social graces. She does not always have a good relationship with her sister Arya, whose interests are opposite in many respects and bewildering to Sansa. She was briefly accompanied by a direwolf pup named Lady.

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

When her father became the Hand of the King, eleven-year old Sansa was delighted at the prospect of life at court in King's Landing, and thrilled to be betrothed to the handsome Prince Joffrey. She adored Joffrey in spite of his violent mood swings, and gave false testimony defending him against Arya, which resulted in the death of her own direwolf, Lady. She was dismayed when her father announced plans to send her home and end the betrothal. Still trusting those at the royal court to be noble, she told Queen Cersei Lannister of her father's plans to send her away, unwittingly aiding the queen's plot against Eddard. It was only when her father was beheaded at Joffrey's command that Sansa saw Joffrey for what he really was.

A Clash of Kings

She remained betrothed to Joffrey, and was frequently beaten by the knights of the Kingsguard on Joffrey's orders until she was set aside in favor of Margaery Tyrell. No longer certain of whom she could trust, she accepted the promise of the alcoholic ex-knight Ser Dontos Hollard that he would see her sent safely home, at first considering him a gallant rescuer, but later doubting his competence.

Sansa remained courteous to everyone she met, including Joffrey's bodyguard Sandor Clegane, who was by turns brusque and gentle with her. After the Battle of the Blackwater, Clegane drunkenly offered to take Sansa with him as he fled King's Landing. When she refused, he made her sing for him at knifepoint, and in later recollection Sansa mistakenly believes he kissed her. Sansa also became involved with the Tyrells, who wanted to know the truth about Joffrey before Margaery married him. They planned to marry Sansa to Willas Tyrell, the crippled young heir to Highgarden.

A Storm of Swords

After revealing the Tyrell plan to Ser Dontos (who told his master Petyr Baelish, who in turn told the Lannisters), Sansa was instead forced to marry the king's uncle, the dwarf Tyrion Lannister. Dismayed by her hideous new husband and horrified by the deaths of her siblings and parents, a now thirteen-year old Sansa hid her feelings and tried to be the ideal wife she had been trained to be, though Tyrion never required her to consummate the marriage.

Sansa escaped King's Landing on the day of Joffrey's wedding during the chaos caused by his death. Believing Ser Dontos to be her saviour, she was yet again disillusioned when she learned that not only was he being paid by Petyr Baelish to spirit her away, but that Baelish had been working in league with the Tyrells to kill Joffrey at the wedding, smuggling the poison into the wedding feast in a hairnet Ser Dontos had given Sansa to wear. Baelish had Ser Dontos shot at sea before taking Sansa to the Vale by ship. There, Baelish married Sansa's aunt, Lysa Arryn, and all three returned to her seat at the Eyrie.

While at the Eyrie, Sansa was instructed to pretend she was Baelish's bastard daughter, Alayne Stone, as the queen had offered a large bounty for Sansa Stark as an accomplice in the murder of King Joffrey. She again tried to fit in, playing with her young cousin Robert Arryn, but found herself prey to the sexual advances of Lysa's bard Marillion and later by Lord Baelish himself. Lysa spotted Baelish kissing Sansa in the gardens at the Eyrie and tried to kill Sansa in a jealous rage. After saving Sansa from the Moon Door, Baelish pushed Lysa to her death, framing Marillion for the murder and involving Sansa in the cover-up.

A Feast for Crows

After Lysa's death Sansa became de facto mistress of the Eyrie, and learned courtly intrigues from Baelish. She maintained the Alayne Stone persona and began to forget her identity as Sansa Stark. While still demanding kisses from his supposed daughter, Baelish revealed his plan for her marriage to Harrold Hardyng, the heir to House Arryn, and the eventual revelation of her true identity and the reclaiming of Winterfell in her name.

Appearance

Sansa is traditionally beautiful, taking after her mother's family (the Tullys) with her high cheekbones, vivid blue eyes and thick auburn hair. As she has grown up, her figure has been described as tall, graceful and womanly.
