A sea battle off Fair Isle[1] was a pivotal battle in Greyjoy's Rebellion, taking place in the Straits of Fair Isle.

Background

Euron Greyjoy and his brother, Lord Captain Victarion Greyjoy, led the burning of the Lannister fleet anchored at Lannisport to begin Greyjoy's Rebellion on behalf of their elder brother, Balon. In response, King Robert I Baratheon brought the royal fleet commanded by Lord Stannis Baratheon, supported by warships from the Arbor, Oldtown, and the Reach, to deal with the longship threat of the Iron Islands.[2]

Battle

Led by Victarion, the Iron Fleet found itself in the Straits of Fair Isle, with the island of Fair Isle to their west and the mainland of the westerlands to their east. Stannis's ships trapped them from the north and the south, smashing the ironborn fleet off Fair Isle.[3][4]

Golden Storm, the ship of the youngest Greyjoy brother, Aeron, was destroyed by Stannis's flagship, Fury.[3] Lady Gwynesse Harlaw's husband died in the battle, as did the two sons of Lord Rodrik Harlaw.[5]

Aftermath

With the threat of the Iron Fleet diminished, King Robert I Baratheon was able to land in the Iron Islands and put down Greyjoy's Rebellion.[2] Aeron Greyjoy was held prisoner by House Lannister at Casterly Rock.[3]

Quotes

Victarion: Would you lesson me in warfare? I was fighting battles when you were sucking mother's milk.

Victarion: Every man should lose a battle in his youth, so he does not lose a war when he is old.[6]

The memory of Fair Isle still rankled in the iron captain's memory.[4]
