A Dance with Dragons

When he is brought before Lord Godric Borrell on Sweetsister Davos Seaworth is served sister’s stew. The stew is served it on a trencher hollowed out of a stale loaf. It is thick with leeks, carrots, barley, and turnips white and yellow, along with clams and chunks of cod and crabmeat, swimming in a stock of heavy cream and butter. Davos thinks it is the sort of stew that warms a man right down to the bones, just the thing for a wet cold night. He spoons it up gratefully. [1]

Davos has tasted sister’s stew before as it is served all of the Three Sisters, in every inn and tavern. However Lord Godric insists that it is better than what Davos has had before, his granddaughter Gella makes it. He tells Davos there are three kinds of crab in the stew: red crabs and spider crabs and conquerors.

Davos is grateful for the stew; it means that he is a guest in Lord Godric Borrell halls - for one night at least. Davos reassures himself that despite the black repute of Lord Godric even robber lords and wreckers are bound by the laws of hospitality.

Davos notes that there are stranger spices than salt in this particular sister’s stew. He asks if it is saffron that he is tasting. Lord Godric confirms that it is, from Qarth and that there is pepper too - cracked black pepper from Volantis

Lord Godric tells Davos he had 40 chests of pepper. Not to mention cloves and nutmeg, and a pound of saffron. He tells Davos he took it off a sloe-eyed maid and laughs.
